Snapchat is allegedly in the final stages of talks to acquire mobile search startup Vurb for $110 million. Reportedly, Snapchat is trying to keep current CEO and founder of Vurb, Bobby Lo, around for the future, by offering $75 million in retention bonuses.
Vurb is a search and discovery mobile app that strives to give its users suggestions and results tailored to their personal preferences and needs. The app provides highly personalized suggestions based on the time of day, the user's location, weather conditions, as well as community recommendations and other factors. Results are presented as cards akin to those in Google Now. Thus, Vurb ditches the endless results pages typical for most search engines in favor of a more streamlined and convenient interface.
It is currently unknown what Snapchat plans to do with its new acquisition and which – if any – of Vurb's current features will make their way into the Snapchat app. Helping users make plans with friends is one possibility, and adding a daily news digest feature to the chat app is another.
