Motorola first released its clamshell foldable Razr model in 2020. The first model had several features created to bring back memories of the Razr V3 feature phone from the pre-smartphone era.
The original generation Motorola Razr smartphone even featured a "Retro Razr" mode that brought back the design and UI of the Razr V3, including the unique-looking keypad and the small display at the top.
Eventually, Motorola, facing competition from the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series, turned the Razr clamshell foldable into a flagship smartphone and even introduced the Razr Ultra in the US in 2025.
The Razr clamshell had done well enough to give Motorola 28%-30% of the global foldable market by 2025, and 44% of the US foldable market during the same year. This gave Motorola the confidence to create a book-style foldable, which it launched this year.
Razr Fold specs include Android 16 pre-installed
The Motorola Razr Fold sports an 8.1-inch internal OLED display with a resolution of 2484 x 2232 and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The external display features a 6.6-inch OLED screen with a 2520 x 1080 resolution and a 165 Hz refresh rate.
The phone carries 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512 GB of UFS 4.1 storage. The 6,000 mAh battery powering the device gives the Razr Fold the largest battery capacity of any foldable phone available in the States. It charges at 80 W Wired and 50 W Wireless.

Motorola matches rivals with the Razr Fold's promised software updates
Android 16 is pre-installed, which brings us to today's news. Motorola promises Razr Fold buyers seven years of Android OS updates and seven years of security updates.
Last month, Motorola started pushing out the Android 17 update for the clamshell foldable. However, it has yet to disseminate Android 17 for the book-style Razr Fold. Apparently, the Lenovo subsidiary has yet to optimize Android 17 to work with the Razr Fold's foldable display.
As it turns out, the Razr Fold is receiving an update right now, but it is not Android 17. Instead, Motorola's book-style foldable is getting an update that takes the security patch from August 2026 to October 2026, moving the device from two months behind rivals to even with them.
The unlocked version of the Razr Fold will receive software version W3WBS36.36-123-2-1, while the version locked to a carrier is getting version W3WBS36.36-123-5-1.
Motorola has often been criticized for falling behind rivals when it comes to Android updates. It is making an effort to catch up and needs to show that it is making strides, especially with high-profile devices like the Razr Fold.
