Google is continuing to fix issues and bugs affecting Android 17 by pushing out updates to improve the platform. These updates are sent to Pixel models that are still receiving support from Google. The Alphabet subsidiary has released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7, which is available for models as old as the Pixel 6a.

These are the Pixel models eligible to receive Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7

The Pixel devices that are eligible to receive Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7 include:

How to join the Android 17 Beta Program

The update requires you to have your Pixel opted into the Android 17 Beta Program. This is pretty easy to do. If you own a Pixel 6a or later, visit the Android Beta Program website and tap on the rectangle that says "View your eligible devices."

You'll be sent to a page with an image of your eligible Android devices and a button to press to opt in to Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7. Before you do that, make sure to back up your phone. Not too long after you opt in, you should receive a notification that the update has arrived.

How to install the latest Beta update on your Pixel phone

To install the new software update, go to Settings > System > Software update > System update. If you receive an update prompt, follow the directions to download and install it on your Pixel phone.

According to the release notes, there are two top issues fixed for Pixel devices with Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7. The first one is huge because it involves the Pixel battery. Nothing irks a Pixel user more than a battery drain, watching the status bar as the battery indicator declines faster than the "You owe" line on a gas pump rises.

The update fixes an issue causing the Pixel battery to drain

To be sure, the release notes for the update says that Beta 7 fixed the issue that caused "Excessive battery drain during idle states when Flip to Shh prevents the device from entering deep sleep."

Flip to Shh is a feature on Pixel phones that immediately silences the device and puts it in vibrate mode when the phone is placed screen down on a flat surface. According to an Issue Tracker that was submitted by a Pixel user, battery drain at night with Flip to Shh enabled had increased at a rate of 33%.

A second Issue Tracker submission showed that the battery drained at a rate that was 5-10mAh/hr higher than normal.

The second top issue fixed in Beta 7 was this:
"HTTPS downloads fail immediately when initiated through the system DownloadManager."

Pixel users who have been dealing with the battery drain will surely be happy to see that Google has taken care of the issue with Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7.
