Do not phone in your claim to Apple for your "Crackgate" Duo or you might have to pay a huge sum

Unless you don't mind paying $99 or as much as $999 to fix your Duo's internal display, follow these rules.

Some iPhone Duo owners are wondering how the heck they could be charged $99 to as much as $999 to have their iPhone Duo repaired. After all, it is pretty obvious that Apple is responsible for "Crackgate," which has resulted in the same portion of the internal screen forming an "L"-shaped crack on various Duo units.

If you're being charged to repair your Duo's internal screen, you are doing things the wrong way

But here's the thing. Those Duo owners complaining about having to pay a $99 co-pay to repair a manufacturing defect are going about things the wrong way. Let's slow down for a minute and examine what is happening.

A damaged iPhone Duo should be brought to the Genius Bar to determine whether the fault lies with Apple or the user

The damage to the iPhone Duo's internal display, if caused by a manufacturing issue, would be fixed by Apple at no cost to the owner. However, instead of taking their damaged foldable to an Apple Store Genius Bar to claim that Apple was at fault, it appears that some are using Apple's phone support line to submit a claim.

The problem with phoning in a claim for the Duo's internal screen is that using phone support typically results in the device owner communicating with a rep more likely to submit a standard Express Replacement claim. And this automatically enables the $99 accidental damage AppleCare+ co-pay. If the Duo owner didn't sign up for AppleCare+, the Duo owner could be on the hook for a $999 bill.

Bring your damaged Duo to the closest Apple Store instead of phoning in a claim

An iPhone Duo owner whose internal screen is cracked in the same fashion as all of the other damaged units needs to bring the phone to a Genius Bar where it can be officially determined that a manufacturing problem caused the damage.

As former PhoneArena writer Bill Shakespeare once wrote, "Aye, there's the rub." Getting Apple to admit that the issue is one of its own making is difficult. As we told you just a few days ago, an iPhone Duo owner whose internal screen cracked in the now-infamous "L-shaped" design was told that Apple's warranty would not cover the repair.

Apple claimed that its investigation determined that the device had been dropped. Frankly, there is nothing that stops Apple from claiming that all damaged Duo units were dropped.

It is so ironic that this is happening at all since Apple used to use its concern about the durability of the folding internal screen as a reason not to compete in the sector. The big question is how Apple proceeds from here and whether "Crackgate" has an impact on Duo sales.

When things are fresh in your mind, jot down notes explaining how the device was damaged

This is what you need to remember if your iPhone Duo's internal screen cracks. While things are fresh in your mind, jot down everything that happened leading up to the screen getting damaged. Bring the damaged Duo to your nearest Apple Store and do not phone in a warranty claim.

Apple needs to step up here, take responsibility, and do the right thing. It will be interesting to see whether we see a large number of Duo buyers decide to return their phones after this news gets out. Even if Apple does the right thing and facilitates repairs of the device, no one wants to worry that the $2,000 phone is tied up as it undergoes repairs.

There is no question that "Crackgate" has let some of the wind out of the sales. Next Monday Apple will report its third quarter results and we will learn whether the tech giant has had to reduce its expectations because of the Duo's issues.
