You might be getting some money from Apple instead of paying them for a change. That's because the tech giant settled a class action lawsuit on Tuesday for $250 million. The suit had been filed by Peter Landsheft in U.S. federal court in California in 2024 after Apple started running an ad promoting "More Personal Siri," which was the title of the spot.

Personal Siri makes the assistant much more useful

The ad starred U.K. actress Bella Ramsey, who is at some business event when she spots someone waving at her from across the room, but when trying to remember his name, Bella's mind goes blank. To stop her from looking foolish in front of this guy, she grabs her iPhone and says,"Siri, what's the name of the guy I had a meeting with a couple months ago at Café Grenel?"

Siri responds by saying, "You met Zac Wingate at Café Grenel a couple of months ago." Now that she knew his name, the ad shows Ramsey walking up to the guy and saying, "Hi, Zac." The ad was created to show off a new feature for Siri that would allow a newly upgraded version of Siri to go through these apps to discover the name of the guy Ramsey met at the Cafe months ago:

  • Contacts
  • Apple Calendar
  • Apple Photos

The new features for Siri were delayed after not appearing for the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 series in iOS 18.1. Apple then announced in March 2025 that the upgrades for Siri were delayed until 2026 and pulled the "More Personal Siri" ad.

Siri 2.0 has proven to be the longest running case of vaporware in Apple's history

In February 2026, just weeks before we expected Apple to release the first iOS 26.4 Beta with the updated Siri, a report revealed that the new Siri was being delayed again. Hopes that we would finally see what has been dubbed Siri 2.0 in iOS 26.5 were also smashed when the iOS 26.5 Beta failed to include any improvements to Siri.

Now, it seems clear that the Siri update will be the big feature in iOS 27, and we will hear more about it during the WWDC 2026 keynote on June 8. On that date, Apple will release the first iOS 27 Beta that might include the new and improved Siri.

Apple settled the class action suit to move forward with its business of creating innovative products

When Apple failed to release the iPhone 16 line in September 2024 with any of the Apple Intelligence features it said would appear on the new line when launched, and Personal Siri was nowhere to be found, the lawsuit was filed. It wasn't until Apple released the iOS 18.1 Beta updates in summer 2024 that some AI features were introduced

How much each U.S. iPhone owner might receive from the settlement

The plaintiffs claim that the delay in releasing the AI features displayed at WWDC 2024, including "Personal Siri" harmed stockholders. While Apple did not admit to being at fault in the settlement, it did say that it has released other AI features since it released Apple Intelligence in 2024.

The judge overseeing the class action suit still has to approve the settlement. Assuming that he does sign off on it, U.S. iPhone users can expect to receive $25-$95 each depending on how many iPhone users submit a claim to the court.
