Granted, we are still waiting on the first real-life camera samples from the Sony Xperia Z1 that was just announced, yet the cameraphone lines were already drawn with its announcement, and Sony's concept is different than the approach of Nokia or Samsung, the other two juggernauts with camera-centric handsets this season.

Sony's idea is to provide a sleek waterproof device not that much different than your current modern flagships on the outside, and stuff a souped up regular sensor inside, alongside photocentric features and apps, keeping things elegant. If you want extra camera abilities, you can attach the QX10 or QX100 lens-style cameras, and become a formidable wedding photographer even.

Samsung's approach seems to be the laziest one - it took a camera body, complete with optical zoom lens, and slapped a phone in it for a rather bulky and pocket-unfriendly S4 Zoom, albeit for a pretty decent price.

Nokia put the most thought in the cameraphone puzzle by choosing a hybrid approach with lens and sensor that are much larger and better than your average smartphone units, yet developed from the ground-up for mobile to keep size and weight comparatively in check for a still portable Lumia 1020. Which one of these approaches do you prefer on paper for now, before the true camera comparisons start to trickle down?

the Z1 is clearly the winner here u have killer specs an awesome huge screen and its slimmer than both of those phones and the camera should produce more than satisfactory images in other words its THE COMPLETE PACKAGE

I would choose the Z1 because it doesn't have a huge dinky camera attached to it...

Z1 FTW!!!

There isn't enough software magic to save Sony from the 1020 with those camera specs but its sexy as hell imo. I also like sonys UI

You trust this pr released by sony itself? Reviews and camera comparison will commence in a few more days and results will say otherwise. Nothing beats the oversampling tech by Nokia. It's 10 years ahead of everything else on mobile.

I wonder where can we find and download the original image from each cameraphone in this test assessment? Does Lumia 1020 result that much different from Lumia 925? I think I'll wait for comparison review from PA and other website.

Nokia 808 PureView is the grandpa now, let grandpa have some rest. Now, it's time for the teenagers to compete against each other.

i think the zed one is incomplete without the lense no xenon no OIS after you get accustomed to these things you expect them from everything else i feel the same with lumia rich audio recording every other camera phone video sounds like crap compared

If 1020 has 5" screen it would definitely be heavier.

Mi choice is Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom... However Sony Xperia Z1 is great, wonderful !!! And next to the S4 Zoom and 808 Pureview (Cameraphone Hors Concours) are the 3 major cameraphones the world ! 1020 "Fake Pureview" is crap... Very marketing and little effective results !
