How to get the new Google Now launcher on any Android phone or tablet

Google just released its new stock launcher in the Play Store, but it appears for download only on Nexus devices, and those Google Play Edition flagships you may or may not have. Fret not, as you can obtain the goodies that come with the Google Now Launcher on any Android device, too, though if you are running a custom ROM, you might experience some hiccups.

1. First off, you have to download the latest version of Search, and have it preinstalled on the gear, as it's an integral part of the experience.
2. Download the Google Now Launcher, and sideload it as an APK file, if you have anything different than the abovementioned Nexus and GPe devices.
3. Say "OK, Google", and start bothering the Mountain View brainiacs with quirky questions.

I hate the way 4.4 looks stock. Looks very generic to me.
I can't wait to see what other mfg's do with their skins though.

I honestly love it to the point that dark themes seem too dull for me

i have just just switched form iphone 5, to a moto g and well, i think its better and i love the black theme, but everything gets old after a while, i hated the look of ios 1-6 but i really liked ios 7 and i think that's why i love the colorfulness of this launcher, also anyone wondering from everyday use theres like zero difference in performance from the iphone 5 to moto g for me, only thing thats not as good is app load time, like playing csr racing the little loading circle freezes a bit but then it plays fine afterwards.

Seriously, setting all bias aside... I haven't seen a version of Android that doesn't remind me of my old WinMo device from last decade...
.....................
It's good for some people, and I'm sure it performs well, but I have to have a more modern looking, organized, and functioning OS on my device.. But, that's just my opinion.. Not trying to bash Android, but that's just what I see when I navigate through Android..

My human side of multi tasking failed, not so much the equipment in my hands.
I errored.

So are you saying you and rod never let a typo post of your wp handsets?
That would hold as much water as Rod or you being unbiased.
C'mon.

Lol!!!! Give it up dude.. In case you haven't noticed a Lumia device is ONLY a WP device, so if you're interested in a Lumia then you're interested in WP, or you're about to make the worst purchase of your life... Or, are you talking about the NX?.. That's the Nokia device you're saying everyone is interested in more than anything?.. ????

Install any launcher you like. I prefer Nova Prime. And I don't know what WinMo device you were using, but as a WinMo user for many years I never saw one that looked like any Android home screen.

ok we get it, you love wp. can you not post on every single article that you love your wp? its getting annoying really

and dude i know you over from wpcentral and i get the culture there but the same thing doesn't apply here. guys here (mostly) love all platforms and tech in general

Right.. Looking at the hate WP gets on here is staggering..
also if he chooses to post in every WP article so be it.. I'm pretty sure he can do that

Doesn't mean that it ain't annoying. And its fanboys like you who see wp hate comments. Non-sheeps here love tech in general that includes windows phone. There are valid criticisms and worthy opinions like your first post there and there are worship comments like his posts in this site.

And again, this isn't a wp-praise site so don't force the culture here. That's the only thing i hate about mobile nation sites - most of them there are sheeps about there os if choice (yes including android central)

And again ill say anything because its my opinion and its just as valid as yours.
not all comments by me or any other fanboy is all bias. There's a reason every other WP related article gets ran up to 4-5 pages of comments .

Care to read the comments again if they aren't bias? And they sure as hell are annoying and never really foster meaningful discussion. Wp articles get many comments because you guys feel the need to defend it even if there is nothing to argue about.Plus this article isn't even remotely connected to wp. The only reason we are arguing about it is he brought it up, which he does on most non-wp articles.

I'm running it right now on the Nexus 4. While the always on listening (when in home screen) and easy swype for cards is cool, and it's as fluid as anything, it's quite limited compared to ActionLauncher, and you lose the innovative swype-over-icon functions.

Luckily for us however, if you run the Google Now Launcher over the Action Launcher, you still retain your side swype bars, so I use this 'Action Now' hybrid for the moment. Ideal would be simply adding always-listening function to AL.

It works on many 4.2 devices. In fact, it works on all 3 different phones I have which run 4.2.x
Nothing about "as well" was even mentioned, man. It doesn't work on his device.

What OS version, stock, sense, phone? You can get it to work with other devices, as others already got google now working on 4.0, but they had to do more than just add the launcher.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3: Android 4.2 (4.2.1 or 4.2.1, I don't have it with me now)
Samsung Galaxy Light: Android 4.2.2
BLU Life Play: 4.2.2

It works on all those devices. All stock, no root, no tweaks. I just update the Google Search app and install the apk.

Rodeyenj1, just face the facts that Android is a better OS - most WinMob users went to Android because it was mod friendly, and Windows 8/8.1 is not mod friendly.....

Heh, I might be a philistine here but all the various themes, launchers and skins doesn't seem to cut it for me. The Google Now launcher might be the same. Touchwiz still seems much more functional to me. I tried using themer, nova launcher, apex launcher and lightning launcher but i switched back to touchwiz each time after a few hours. Maybe it's because i haven't been able to unlock each launchers full potential. Any thoughts?

I'm obsessed with always having the most up to date version of everything Google. Not with this though. I'm perfectly happy with the way Google Now launches on you Moto X. Side swiping just seems pointless when you can swipe up from the home icon or simply say "OK Google Now".... Am I missing something here? Is there more to the update than just how you open it?
