The latest software updates aren't done wreaking havoc on the Pixel lineup just yet. Following a string of bootloop and battery drain issues, owners are now complaining of slower devices.

Sloth mode?

While Pixels have many strengths, they have never been the fastest. That's even though they command flagship prices.

The March and April updates have only exacerbated the situation. According to a wave of complaints highlighted by Android Authority, Pixels have slowed to a crawl, with input processing lagging significantly behind reality.

Affected users claim that apps are slow and crashy. They take longer to open and scrolling is sluggish. In some cases, the keyboard freezes mid-sentence.

For some users, switching between apps is now a chore, and even basic web browsing has become an exercise in patience.

What went wrong?

While the stuttering began immediately following the recent updates, the exact root cause remains a mystery.

While most of the complaints come from Pixel 9 users, older models like the Pixel 6 are also feeling the drag. Even the Pixel 10 hasn't been spared.

Most users don't seem to have done anything to nuke performance, such as dropping their devices or filling storage to the brim.

However, some users have noted significant overheating, suggesting the Tensor chip is under strain. That doesn't mean customers are overtaxing their devices, with even essential apps like Google Maps becoming unusable.

No concrete fix has been found yet, though some customers claim that a factory reset works, while others found respite by ditching Wi-Fi for cellular data.

PixelCommunity, Google's official Reddit account, has recommended rebooting in safe mode to rule out third-party apps. Users aren't buying it, arguing the scale of the problem makes a rogue app unlikely.

Other responses from PixelCommunity have been equally unhelpful, suggesting Google hasn't even begun a formal investigation.

Google couldn't care less

From Pixels dying mid-day to basic browsers acting up, some Pixel phones have become essentially useless over the last two months.

Naturally, customers are incensed, with some accusing Google of planned obsolescence. Others are understandably cross at not getting their money's worth, swearing off Google.

Google's lacklustre response is not only discouraging for customers, but it's perhaps also a sign that the company might not grasp the gravity of the situation.

Google needs to get it together

This has been a total trainwreck of a month for Pixel users. While updates often result in unexpected bugs, most companies are quick to iron them out.

Google's slow response threatens to derail its slow climb up the shipping charts.

Whether the problems can be chalked up to Tensor chip limitations or Google's total disregard for anything that doesn't involve the word "AI" isn't clear. But if Google doesn't want the Pixel to be a resident of its infamous product graveyard, it needs to get its act together.
