Financing a phone through a carrier is already a murky business. The best deals are reserved for premium plans, and the highest trade-in credits require a relatively new upper-tier model. If you are on T-Mobile, paying off your phone early means forgoing your remaining promotional bill credits.
T-Mobile is reportedly making the process even more convoluted.
Being on a new plan with an eligible phone won't be enough
T-Mobile is expected to roll out new T-Mix plans, which will determine your eligibility for perks and handset deals based on "picks." Picks are essentially tokens awarded based on your plan tier and the number of lines on your account.
Google's flagship Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL are expected to require 2 picks and an eligible trade-in for a $1,000 discount. For 1 pick, the discount will be reduced to $500.
Since the picks will also go toward perks, with ESPN swallowing 4 picks and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate taking 3, you must know where to spend your picks.

How does this work?
T-Mix, like Experience 2.0 plans, will feature a 36-month financing schedule. While T-Mix Loaded and T-Mix More will be similar to Experience Beyond 2.0 and Experience More 2.0, respectively, there will also be a new T-Mix Standard entry-level tier starting at $65 per month per line.

T-Mix plans will apparently get higher discounts than Experience Beyond 2.0. For instance, while Experience Beyond 2.0 is shaving $1,000 off the iPhone 18 Pro, T-Mix will increase the discount to $1,200. The catch is that it will also require 3 picks.
On T-Mix Standard, you will get 1 pick per line, for up to four lines. On T-Mix More, lines one through three will get two picks each, while any additional line up to nine will receive one.
T-Mix Loaded subscribers will get three picks for each of the first two lines, two picks per line thereafter for up to six lines, and then one pick per line for lines 7 to 12.
The system is complex, and customers aren't thrilled. Many of them would appreciate more connectivity-related benefits instead of digital perks.
T-Mobile is overestimating its audience
Approximately 40% of T-Mobile customers don't know which plan they are on, let alone how to figure out a picks system. Also, the average wireless account has two lines, so most customers likely won't be able to accumulate enough picks to spend on both upgrades and add-ons.
