In less than two weeks, Samsung's 2026 Galaxy Z foldable line will be introduced at the summer Unpacked event. At the event, Samsung will introduce the following devices:
- Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 (rumored to have a wider internal display)
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (the premium model)
Timepieces
Wearables
- Samsung Galaxy Glasses preview
Let's talk about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8. On Instagram, an account jointly owned by Samsung Mobile and Qualcomm's Snapdragon brand of semiconductors put up a post showing a video of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset being placed on a circuit board. While we don't see the actual device in the video, the silhouette does not appear to be that of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra as it is too narrow and wide.
Samsung will use the "for Galaxy" variant of a Snapdragon AP on a Galaxy Z foldable for the first time
Hmm. Does Samsung have a book-style foldable that will be wider and thinner than previous models? Why yes, yes it does. That would be the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
And sure enough, the Instagram post mentions an exciting new silhouette, which no doubt refers to the wider design of the Galaxy Z Fold 8. It also indicates that the "for Galaxy" version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will most likely be used on both variants of Sammy's 2026 book-style foldables.
What the "for Galaxy" version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 means
The "for Galaxy" version of the chipset usually features a small increase in clock speed that is generated by overclocking the component. Last year's Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy SoC that powers the Galaxy S25 Ultra had an approximately 3.5% faster clock speed than the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. By the way, the latter is the application processor (AP) that was employed on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year.

Samsung will not use dual-sourcing for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra
So we can expect a more powerful processor driving Samsung's two book-style foldable phones that will be released this year. To be clear, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy will power the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra in all regions throughout the world. Samsung will resort to dual-sourcing for its clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 8 model.
In all major European markets and in South Korea, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 will be powered by the homegrown 2nm Exynos 2600 AP. In North America (US and Canada), China, Japan, and the rest of the world, Samsung will equip the Galaxy Z Flip 8 with the 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy.
The 3.5% increase in clock speed seen with the "for Galaxy" version of the AP might look good on a spec sheet, but the real improvement will come with custom optimizations for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra's displays.
