It's not often that a product lives up to the hype. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 began to pique consumer interest long before its official announcement. Samsung clearly saw the potential, which is why it hyped up the device far more aggressively in the days leading up to the launch than the Fold 8 Ultra and Flip 8. But can Samsung rightfully take credit for the device?
The Fold 8 is proving to be a runaway success. Higher-than-anticipated demand has pushed delivery dates back, and pre-orders are three times higher than the Fold 7.
Samsung's efforts are paying off, but it probably shouldn't thump its chest too loudly, or consumers won't let it live the flex down. Huawei was technically first to market with this wider aspect ratio, though restrictions kept the product from becoming a global hit.

The Fold 8 marks the first major redesign of Samsung's book-style series since its introduction. Samsung spent more time popularizing this short and wide form factor than the other two bendables in the lineup. We polled our readers to see why they think the Fold 8 got the spotlight.

Chicken or the egg?
We will never know for sure who copied whom. The rumor mill suggests that Apple was first to pursue the design on paper. That said, Samsung was the first mainstream manufacturer to launch and popularize foldable phones, so the South Korean giant is hardly the laggard here.
Perception matters
A buyer convinced that Samsung cloned Apple might decide to hold off a month for the iPhone Ultra. After all, why settle for the copy when the original is right around the corner?
As our resident reviewer Victor Hristov notes in his review, the Fold 8 is a promising device with a lightweight design, impressive battery life, and snappy performance. However, the camera system and software miss the mark, which is where the iPhone Ultra might outshine it.
Then again, plenty of buyers simply don't care about the origin story and will get their hands on the first wide foldable they can find. Either way, the comparisons to the iPhone Ultra certainly aren't hurting the Fold 8.
