The release of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra models is just around the corner. Now that Samsung has introduced an Ultra model to the Fold lineup, the company is adding a lot of new upgrades to live up to that moniker, including “significantly” enhancing the display’s screen resolution.
Higher resolution for the display

According to a new leak from a very reliable source, Samsung has “significantly enhanced the screen resolution” for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
Samsung has significantly enhanced the screen resolution of the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra
Though the leak is scarce on details, there is a fair amount that we can guess at just by looking at last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7. The main display of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has less pixel density than the Galaxy S26 Ultra and even the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Samsung presumably wants to bring the Fold 8 Ultra up to the standards of its other Ultra phones, and it’s not just through higher resolutions.
In which aspect does the Galaxy Z Fold 7 feel lacking?
How good was the Fold 7?
While the external display on the Fold 7 has a respectable ppi (pixels per inch) of 422, the main internal display only has a ppi of 368. Compared to the ppi of around 500 for the Galaxy S26 Ultra and the Galaxy S25 Ultra, this is severely lacking.

The higher the ppi is on a phone, the less the pixels are visible to the naked eye and the more screen clarity there is for the phone. The display on the Fold 7 could hardly be called bad, but Samsung feels that there is a lot more improvement to be had yet, and I agree.
This is especially true because if there’s one thing that Apple won’t be compromising on with the foldable iPhone, it’s the resolution of its displays.

Samsung has renamed the successor to the Fold 7, which is now the aforementioned Fold 8 Ultra. The standard Fold 8 will be a wide-folding phone similar to Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone Ultra and the existing Huawei Pura X Max.
To sell the Ultra badging for the Fold 8 Ultra, the higher resolution is just one of the many welcome upgrades that Samsung is introducing. For example, the battery capacity is going up to 5,000 mAh from the 4,400 mAh on the Fold 7. Notably, 5,000 mAh is also the battery capacity of the Galaxy S26 Ultra and many Ultra models before it.
Furthermore, Samsung has made smaller front cameras for its upcoming Fold models, which will likely also be seen across the Galaxy S27 series next year. Of course, improvements to the display crease and the upgraded processor will also make the Fold 8 Ultra an excellent buy this year.
In fact, if you're wondering whether to get the Galaxy Z Fold 8 or the foldable iPhone this year, the smartest choice might be to get the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra instead if you don't want to wait another year.
Ah, innovation. You love to see it

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 was a massive jump ahead compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6, and now the two new Fold 8 models are also seeing a number of excellent upgrades.
Last year, Samsung made the Fold 7 so good because of how far behind it had fallen compared to Chinese foldable flagships. This year, the Fold 8 exists because of the threat of Apple’s upcoming foldable and Samsung is going all out with the Fold 8 Ultra to win over as many new customers as it can.
Don’t you just love seeing competition drive genuine innovation? Now, if only Samsung would finally ditch those 5,000 mAh batteries.
