Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra arrives this month with 8 features that make it Samsung's most exciting foldable yet
The Fold 7's successor is coming in hot, and here's why it deserves the Ultra name.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is coming this month, most likely on July 22 – and despite carrying a new name, it's the true successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Samsung has a lot riding on this one: the foldable iPhone may finally be real, Chinese rivals have been outpacing it on battery and charging for years, and the Ultra branding sets a high bar to clear.
Based on everything that has leaked so far, here's what has us genuinely excited.
A significantly sharper display

One of the most talked-about upgrades for the Fold 8 Ultra is a "significantly enhanced" screen resolution on the main inner display. The Fold 7's internal panel sat at around 368 ppi – noticeably behind the roughly 500 ppi of the Galaxy S25 Ultra and S26 Ultra.
Samsung appears determined to close that gap and bring its foldable flagship in line with the rest of the Ultra family. Given that Apple won't be cutting corners on display quality with its first foldable iPhone, Samsung can't afford to either.
A bigger, faster-charging battery
The Fold 8 Ultra is rumored to pack a 5,000 mAh battery, up from the 4,400 mAh cell in the Fold 7 – a roughly 14% increase that should translate to a meaningful real-world endurance bump.
More impressive still is the jump to 45W wired charging, compared to the 25W cap on last year's model. That's nearly double the charging speed, which goes a long way toward making a large foldable feel less like a liability when you're running low. The 5,000 mAh figure also aligns with the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which is clearly deliberate branding on Samsung's part.
A razor-thin, surprisingly light build

Fitting a bigger battery into a thinner, lighter phone sounds like it shouldn't be possible – and yet that's what Samsung is reportedly pulling off. The Fold 8 Ultra is said to measure 4.1mm when unfolded, down from 4.2mm on the Fold 7, while keeping the same 215-gram weight.
Given the battery size increase, this will require some genuine engineering work, and it's one of the details that makes the Ultra name feel at least partially earned.
A much-improved ultrawide camera
The Fold 8 Ultra's camera system is getting a significant boost where it matters: the ultrawide shooter is reportedly jumping from 12MP to 50MP, joining the existing 200MP main sensor and 10MP 3x telephoto from the Fold 7.
This upgrade won't be shared with the wider Fold 8, making it a meaningful differentiator for the Ultra. It's worth noting that some have argued the telephoto is actually where the Fold 7 fell short – so whether Samsung picked the right camera to upgrade is a fair question – but a 50MP ultrawide is still a substantial step forward on paper.
Smaller front cameras on both Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Fold 8

A subtler but welcome change: Samsung is reportedly shrinking the front-facing cameras on both Fold 8 models, a tweak that should reduce the visual interruption on both the cover and inner displays. This kind of refinement tends to go unnoticed in spec sheets but makes a real difference in day-to-day use, especially when watching video or gaming on the large inner screen.
A new color lineup, including a striking online exclusive
The Fold 8 Ultra will reportedly launch in Black, White, and Purple, with Green as the online-exclusive option. Black's inclusion is a relief after earlier reports suggested it might be dropped.
The Purple is expected to be a muted tone similar to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, while the Green exclusive has the potential to be a more expressive option than the washed-out Mint that shipped with the Fold 7. Whether it delivers on that potential remains to be seen.
S Pen support making a comeback
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to bring back S Pen support after it was notably absent from the Fold 7. For power users, this is a big deal – the large inner display is one of the best canvases for stylus input on any smartphone, and losing the S Pen felt like a step backward.
Its return would firmly cement the Ultra's credentials as a productivity powerhouse, and it's another point of differentiation from the wider Fold 8, which isn't expected to support it.
A reduced crease – before Apple gets there first

Samsung is reportedly significantly reducing the visibility of the crease on the inner display – the one persistent criticism that has followed every generation of book-style foldables.
If Samsung delivers a noticeably crease-free experience at launch, it takes away one of the strongest arguments for waiting on Apple's first attempt.
