While all eyes are looking at Samsung’s answer to the foldable iPhone Ultra, the Korean company may be preparing a significant upgrade to what could be the best foldable smartphone of the year. According to a new leak, the tall Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra could get a major camera upgrade, that won’t appear on the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 or the Galaxy Z Flip 8.
Samsung’s top-tier foldable to get a significant camera upgrade
The tall Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which is the expected sequel to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, may come with a much better ultrawide camera. According to a Sisa Journal report (translated source), the device will feature a new 50MP sensor, replacing the 12MP sensor on last year’s model.
The new ultrawide camera will join the same main and telephoto camera sensors as on the Z Fold 7. Those are the 200MP ISOCELL HP2 sensor on the primary shooter, and the 10MP ISOCELL 3K1 sensor on the telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

Not coming to the wide foldable

This upgrade is said to come only to the tall model, while the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 may end up with two 50MP sensors for a primary and an ultrawide camera on the back. The selfie cameras on both the external and the internal display are expected to come with 10MP sensors.

Finally, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 may come with a combination of a 50MP primary and a 12MP ultrawide camera. If this turns out to be true, the flip foldable won’t introduce a camera upgrade this year, which will be a little disappointing.
Such a move makes it clear that Samsung is truly treating its tall foldable as the Ultra flagship among the Galaxy Z devices. With this, the Z Fold 8 Ultra takes the top-tier spot, leaving the wider Z Fold 8 as a more affordable alternative with more modest specs.
However, this may be the wrong camera upgrade. In his in-depth camera review of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, my colleague Peter pointed out that the subpar zoom quality was the only drawback worthy of mentioning. Meanwhile, the ultrawide camera saw some significant upgrades over the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
Certainly aimed at Apple

Samsung is obviously paying attention to Apple’s plans about its first foldable iPhone. The iPhone Ultra is expected to get a dual camera and no telephoto shooter. Rumor has it that the main sensor could come with 48MP resolution, but the ultrawide camera may only get a 12MP sensor.
What Apple doesn’t have is a second foldable model with much better specs to compete with the tall Z Fold 8 Ultra. Besides the upgraded camera, Samsung is also rumored to use a much brighter internal display for its Ultra foldable, which may reach up to 3,600 nits brightness.
It’s about the photo quality, not the megapixels
As much as I like camera upgrades, using a new sensor won’t necessarily lead to the Z Fold 8 Ultra taking much better ultrawide photos than the Z Fold 7. That said, it is clear that if you want the best possible foldable, you may need to stick to the classic tall design and miss out on the new wider form factor.
