Price hikes are turning into the new normal not only for smartphones, but for all tech products. With the July 22 Galaxy Unpacked event just around the corner, expectations were that the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8 would come at much higher prices than last year’s phones. It appears that things could look much better than feared.
Samsung may have modest price increases for its new foldables
The US price of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra may exceed $2,000, according to industry sources cited (source in Korean) by the Korean outlet SE Daily. However, the price bump for the tall foldable could be limited to a rather modest $100 compared to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Reserve the Galaxy Z Fold 8 or Z Flip 8 at Samsung
Samsung has just opened its reservation campaign, allowing you to reserve your next Galaxy Z Fold 8 or Z Flip 8 device. The official store is giving you a $30 reservation credit, plus a chance to win one of 10 $500 gift cards.
That would put the price of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra at $2,099 for the base model, while its predecessor started at $1,999 in the United States. This would be an increase of 5%.

Things could still change

An important detail from the report is that the new price isn’t still set in stone. Samsung is reportedly still reviewing both the price of the new foldables and its overall pricing strategy ahead of the Galaxy Unpacked event.
The price of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which used to be called the Galaxy Z Wide Fold, could start at $1,899 for the base 256GB version. The report doesn’t have any details about the potential US price of the Galaxy Z Flip 8.

These US prices reveal a strategy that’s largely in line with a report from last week, which had details about the devices pricing in Germany. According to it, the tall Z Fold 8 Ultra will start at 2,199 euro (about $2,511 when directly converted), which is an increase of 100 euro from last year. The wide Z Fold 8 is expected to be cheaper than the tall model in Europe, and start at 1,999 euro (about $2283 when directly converted).
While the actual US prices won’t be based on those in the EU, the overall approach to the pricing is usually similar. We can safely assume there will be a modest increase in all markets, and that the wide model will get a slightly lower price than the tall foldable.
A missing piece from this new report is the prices of the higher storage variants of the devices, which are likely to see higher increases than the base models.
A good time for foldables
Considering the raging memory and storage price crisis, seeing a mere 5% hike for the Z Fold 8 Ultra could be seen as a nice surprise for Samsung fans. This could also put much higher pressure on Apple after the company raised the prices of most of its products by up to 54%.
People on Reddit seem to have accepted that the Z Fold 8 series will come at higher prices and have shared very different concerns. Some users said they’d wait to see how app compatibility works on the wide model, while others would like to see S Pen support. Still, several redditors will instantly get the wide model, saying they’ve been waiting for it for a while.
An important moment for the whole industry
This rumor could be good news for everyone who’s hoping to get a flagship phone without breaking the bank this year. If Samsung limits the price hikes of its models, I’d expect Apple and the rest of the industry to follow a similar strategy. Still, I won’t get my hopes up before we get the official announcement on July 22.
