As almost everyone who keeps up with the smartphone world knows, a foldable iPhone has been the dream of many an Apple user for years. After all, why should the Android space get to enjoy foldable smartphones when iPhone users have never even been given the choice to do so?

This is the year when all of that changes. Next month, barring some very unfortunate last-minute circumstances, Apple is going to unveil a foldable iPhone, likely named the iPhone Ultra. Which is, in the words of industry insider Mark Gurman, a product that will help Apple bring back some of its original magic.

In my opinion, however, the iPhone Ultra is going to do a lot more than just benefit Apple. In fact, I think that it’s going to change the smartphone industry massively, whether Android users admit it or not.

Let me explain.

This is lots of publicity for foldable smartphones

Apple enjoys a very enviable position in the smartphone market. Oftentimes in the past, the company has singlehandedly revolutionized the industry, sometimes overnight. From the good — wireless audio accessories and fingerprint scanning — to the bad — empty boxes and display notches — other brands have followed Apple’s lead many times.

Modern iPhone design is mimicked quickly. Liquid Glass, the design of the rear camera bump, Dynamic Island, and even the shapes of the earphones and smart watches released by competing manufacturers mimic Apple’s product design.

Even the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is a wide-folding smartphone like the iPhone Ultra, likely came about once Samsung saw the kinds of displays that Apple had requested for its own foldable. The industry waits on Apple’s every move. This is just a fact.

So what do you think will happen when Apple unveils a foldable iPhone at long last? Precisely what has always happened in the past. Except this time, Apple is very late to the party.

The iPhone Ultra will usher in a renaissance of foldables

Apple is entering an already established market. Samsung, Apple’s largest competitor stateside, Google, and a number of other phone manufacturers have been making foldable flagships for years and have gotten very good at it.

However, and this is why I think that the iPhone Ultra is extremely important, foldable phones make up a very tiny percentage of smartphone sales in the world. For most people, foldable phones are still a gimmick, or something that just isn’t worth the extra cash.

But when Apple enters this market with a foldable form factor that has only just appeared, I’m willing to bet that it will bring a ton of attention to foldables in general. Furthermore, phone manufacturers currently not making foldable models will also immediately jump in to try to profit off of the sudden popularity.

The iPhone Ultra is expected to sell spectacularly well despite its reported $2,000+ price tag. It will become a not-too-uncommon sight in public. The appearance of more foldable models across the world from various manufacturers will suddenly put these phones in the spotlight.

Will you be more likely to get a foldable after the iPhone Ultra comes out?

I know that many don’t like to admit this, but Apple’s entry into the foldable segment will get people talking. More importantly, it will get people curious about what they might be missing out on. The iPhone Ultra will be on TV too. It’s a brand new Apple product, after all.

Early iPhone Ultra testers have pretty much confirmed that the phone is going to be a hit. It’s comfortable, durable, and exciting. In short, it’s precisely what Apple needed to get everyone’s attention.

All of this attention means that more and more people will want to try foldable phones. Many of them won’t want to leave Android, though, so they’ll turn to alternatives like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra or the aforementioned Galaxy Z Fold 8.

What I see happening is that foldable phones will no longer be a niche market for a subset of users. Foldable phones will now compete with traditional phones on a much larger scale.

Yes, I think that Apple has that influence. The company is sure to turn a tidy profit, of course, but its long-awaited foldable iPhone is going to accomplish so much more as well.
