Sony’s next smartphone leaks in a new image

It’s almost certain we’re getting the Xperia 10 VIII next week.

Earlier this week, Sony announced a launch event for a mysterious Xperia device, which is most likely going to be the mid-range Xperia 10 VIII. While the company hasn’t given any clue if that’s true, we’ve already seen the phone showing up on Geekbench, and now a new image has leaked.

Xperia 10 VIII shows up in a leaked image

A new photo of what appears to be the Xperia 10 VIII has leaked. Shared by Android Headlines, the image shows the device in a woman’s hand with a design that appears largely unchanged from last year’s Xperia 10 VIII.

Just like its predecessor, the Xperia 10 VIII appears to have a double camera setup on the back, which is placed inside a horizontal camera bar. Sony’s logo is placed inside the camera bump, and there’s a visible NFC logo right below.

Unsurprisingly, there are volume rockers on the right side of the device, but the potential camera button isn’t visible in this image. Last year’s phone had it just below the power button, so it would make sense to have it in the same place this year.

Only one visible change

What looks different from last year’s model is the material of the back of the phone, which appears to be translucent. Paired with the glass elements in Sony’s teaser for the August 25 event, this suggests the phone may come with a frosted glass back.

Aside from that, a Geekbench benchmark has revealed the phone may run Android 16 and sport the same Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chipset and 8GB of RAM as last year’s model.

Another leak has also revealed that the 3.5 mm jack is here to stay, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Sony has pointed it out as one of the features that turned the flagship Xperia 1 VIII into a success for the company.

Regardless of that, the device might follow a similar pattern to the Xperia 10 V, which came with the same internal specs as its predecessor. What was different at the time, were the camera and the display, which gives us a little hope we may see at least some improvements.

RAMpocalypse in action

Of course, there’s a chance that Sony is holding on to updates in an attempt to keep the price of the phone down. The raging memory price crisis has pushed consumer electronics prices up, and budget and mid-range smartphones are among the most impacted devices.

Folks on Reddit are also guessing the so-called RAMpocalypse is to blame for the lack of upgrades. While many users seem excited about the potential design upgrades, everyone hopes there won’t be price increases.

We’ll know more soon

Sony is announcing something on August 25 at 11am Japanese time, which is August 24 at 10pm ET for people in the US. Unfortunately, the device is unlikely to make it stateside, but we can at least hope for a European release.
