We may be yet to see the iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone Ultra at Apple’s September event, but rumors about next year’s phones are already gearing up. A new leak suggests that the anniversary iPhone may share a lot with one of the current models.
Apple’s iPhone 20 design may take cues from the iPhone Air
We’ve already heard multiple times that Apple’s anniversary iPhone will come with a very different all-glass design and a display overhaul. A new post (source in Chinese) from Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital suggests the device may use the same glass assembly process it employed for the iPhone Air, but with some modifications.
The modified equipment is said to be used to produce more rounded glass components for the iPhone 20, compared to those made for the iPhone Air. This aligns with the earlier rumors of a quad-curved display on the new phone. By modifying an existing process, Apple is said to have achieved significant production cost savings.

Besides saving money, Apple may have also achieved some intriguing technical improvements with the new process. The leaker claims that the anniversary iPhone will enjoy a much better heat dissipation and it’ll have a thinner body.

This adds up to various early rumors that Apple will bring some of the design aspects of the upcoming iPhone Ultra and the iPhone Air for the anniversary model. While the so-called iPhone 20 is expected to offer performance similar to the Pro models, it’s expected to be lighter and thinner than them.

However, next year’s device is unlikely to go as thin as the Air, as it would prioritize performance at least a bit more. In his in-depth review of the iPhone Air, my colleague Mariyan found thermal throttling could turn into an issue under heavy loads, but normal day-to-day use was more than fast enough.
What else do we know about the iPhone 20?
Considering the anniversary model is probably launching in more than a year, there is very little set in stone. Earlier rumors suggested that Apple may push the display size so the smaller model reaches 6.4 inches, and the supposed Max version going to a whopping 7-inch screen.
The bigger displays are said to come with a bezel-less design and more power-efficient panels. The phones are also expected to ditch the Dynamic Island and have the front camera and Face ID system under the display.
Of course, a lot can change between today and next September, with some recent rumors even suggesting the whole project was cancelled.
This could actually work
I am not excited about getting an even larger phone, but getting a version of the iPhone Air that addresses its main issues sounds exciting. Power efficiency, better heat dissipation, and more space for a full-fledged Pro camera could make the iPhone 20 surprisingly compelling. Of course, we need to see if Apple actually pulls this off and how much it would charge for such a device.
