Ever wished you could just snip the top off the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 because it's too tall? Well, that's exactly the philosophy behind the Fold 8 wide.

Starting anew

We have officially made it to July, which means the Unpacked event expected on the 22nd is barreling closer by the day. Samsung has started teasing its upcoming devices, albeit a bit cryptically.

The South Korean giant archived (or deleted?) its Instagram grid yesterday before kicking off the marketing campaign for its new phones.

The six new posts seem to allude to the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8, which will be a new entrant this year.

Chop chop

All the clips drive home the same idea: the Fold 8 is a device with a new shape. For a visual representation, Samsung chopped off the top part of a chocolate bar, a puzzle, and a photo strip to visually hint at the design.

While none of the reels show the device, the taglines are pretty telling. From "keep what matters the most" to "shaped to feel just right," Samsung is dropping hint after hint about what's to come.

What will it take for the Fold 8 to be an instant hit?

What's changing

To bring you up to speed, the Galaxy Z Fold 7's direct successor will seemingly be known as the Fold 8 Ultra. The Fold 8 will be a shorter and wider foldable device.

In addition to being compact, the device is also expected to weigh noticeably less than mainstream foldables, with leaker Ice Universe comparing it to the Apple iPhone Air and Galaxy S25 Edge.

For reference, while the Fold 8 Ultra is expected to match its predecessor at 215 grams, the Fold 8 is tipped to clock in at just 201 grams.

It's not going to skimp too much on the specs. According to one leak, the device will sport a 7.6-inch main screen, a 5.5-inch outer screen, a 4,800mAh battery, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, and a 50MP + 50MP dual camera setup.

A step below the Fold 8 Ultra

Perhaps the most glaring omission from the Fold 8 wide is the Ultra's 200MP main camera. That's just a reminder that this is going to be an entry-level device, and that the Fold 8 Ultra will be the one to get for premium specs.
