HTC releases updated Android 4.0 update timeline; all models will be updated by August
Share:
A list of which devices will be getting the update and when can be found at the sourcelink. HTC says that handsets with 512MB or less of ROM (internal memory) will not be getting updated which means no Ice Cream Sandwich for the HTC ChaCha, HTC Salsa, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Explorer and others. Looking at tablets, the HTC Flyer, the HTC EVO View 4G and the HTC JetStream will all stick with Honeycomb.
It's interesting that this is a situation similar to what we saw last year with the HTC Desire. The handset didn't get bumped up to Gingerbread because it only had 512 megabytes of internal memory. HTC's statement that 512MB of ROM was the cutoff point for deciding which models which get Android 4.0 seems to confirm that this is a cut off point and devices like that might not be able to smoothly run Ice Cream Sandwich.

So screwing their tablet owners is proof that HTC is the best of manf at updates? Wrong.

I agree that they should have upgraded the tablets. Tablets have a longer life since there aren't generally on two year contract upgrades.

If you're stupid enough to buy a tablet, you should be screwed every day.

What a f'n joke! Comeback? I bought the HTC View last December and it was released in August and now its too outdated for ICS? HTC is full of it and Sense actually sucks IMO because its to overbearing. I currently own the Galaxy Nexus, I will never own another Android that's not the Nexus series because I don't want any overlays and broken promises about updates just for them to say your phone is not feasible for the update.Atleast I can deal directly with Google and go around this manufacturer delay crap.

The evo view was not a premium or high end flagship device! They can't update all there phones.
42. threeline posted on 23 May 2012, 00:11 0 0
The Evo View is not a phone buddy. Tablets and phones should not be classed together because people are more apt to keep their tablets a lot longer than their phones. People upgrade their phones a yearly basis, I would imagine that people go at least two years before upgrading their tablets especially at the price you have to pay for them subsidized or not. Hell if tablets are replacing laptops then it sure as hell better be able to remain viable for atleast 2 years. The iPad 1 gets all the updates that the iPad 2 gets, I mean I hate to bring Apple up but its the perfect example. It's my opinion people by tablets for different reasons than phones.

If you didnt want the overlays, why did you go with a phone that has the most intensive overlay of them all? The only reason they put limitations on what can and cannot update to ICS is so people dont b"*#@ about their phone not operating correctly.

The Galaxy Nexus doesn't have an UI overlay genius. The HTC EVO View is a 7" tablet since apparently you don't know what's what. I only bought the Evo View Tablet because I got it for 229 on Christmas deal and for your info it has the specs to handle ICS. 1.5ghz processor and 1 gig of RAM, phones now have lower specs and have ICS. Don't believe me on the specs here you go.

I've had the thunderbolt for over 2 years now and you consider an update in august for a device that came BEFORE the ones that are getting updated almost a year later the best?
I will be quite happy to root and replace everything sense and htc has to offer once I upgrade to a device that is not hindered by a manufacturer and their bs.
23. KParks23 posted on 22 May 2012, 17:33 2 0
Thunderbolt only been out a year and 3 months how u had it 2 years lol.. So u think the older phones should get updates before the new ones?? Lmao why should my year old phone be updated before a phone that came out 2 months ago will u guys use some logic how pissed would u be if u just bought a phone and instead of u getting a update they update all the older phones to a new o's and u had this new phone 2 months and are the last to get a update
25. speckledapple posted on 22 May 2012, 18:34 0 0
That was my mistake (thinking of my plan instead). But in an ideal situation new phones should already have the most recent software. Older phones yes they have limitations but planning and executing properly by the company would rid them of problems between old and new phones and updates. They can solve their own problem.

Phone owners always have a very misconstrued sense of time.. "I've been a customer with carrier "x" for "y" amount of time, and this is how they treat me?"
In this sentence, y is always atleast 20% lower then the customer states. I guess they same can be said for how long a customer has owned a phone..

Hey androidornothing, I'd like to introduce you to a little company called Asus ;)
2. jove39 posted on 22 May 2012, 15:17 6 1
ignoring devices with 512mb ram...is just a excuse for manufacturers to push customers into buying new phones...my galaxys with 512mb ram works way better with ICS than any previous version of Android.
22. speckledapple posted on 22 May 2012, 17:26 0 0
it probably has more to do with their use of sense and how much room they want to play with. Has little to do with the ram I am sure.
3. Stuntman posted on 22 May 2012, 15:21 0 0
For a phone that is a year and a half old, my Desire Z is running quite nicely on Gingerbread. As it has only 512MB of ram, it will miss out on ICS. I'd rather have it run well on Gingerbread than poorly on ICS.
4. InspectorGadget80 posted on 22 May 2012, 15:30 0 7
Good comeback? They SAY devices with 512MB or less WON'T BE getting ICS just glad I never bought a HTC phone. they suck just as much when they getting updates
6. Iphone4 (unregistered) posted on 22 May 2012, 15:39 2 3
what a time waste. android 5.0 due soon and they still siting at 2.3. wake up
8. 9_HeLLs_oF_DrOid posted on 22 May 2012, 15:52 1 4
This is the reason why I'm getting tired of Android. If 512MB of RAM ain't enough for ICS, then I guess 1GB wouldn't be enough for JellyBean(!). I'm really looking forward for WP8.
15. iamcc posted on 22 May 2012, 16:47 1 0
What makes you think that will be any different? Didn't they just take Skype off one of the Lumias because it doesn't run well? Not every phone can be updated forever.

iphone 3gs which was released in 2009 got ios5,,, see android is s**t:D
16. theBankRobber posted on 22 May 2012, 17:00 5 2
IOS and Android run differently and 3GS also had features missing that it couldn't get due to limited hardware. Do you need to really troll over something that has always been talked about?
19. nb2six posted on 22 May 2012, 17:06 1 0
and it sure runs speedy on it too doesnt it? I've never seen a Apple device struggle so much to work than I have with a 3GS running iOS 5.

What kind of ignorant nonsense is this??
Author of the article should at least know better..
The new HTC ONE V HAS ICS AND 512MB OF RAM, FOR F**K SAKE.
Not to mention loads of new midrange phones from other manufacturers.
11. PapaSmurf posted on 22 May 2012, 16:10 0 0
Yeah but its a phone that came out in 2012. HTC is now preloading 4.0 on all of their NEW devices, not old.
12. 9_HeLLs_oF_DrOid posted on 22 May 2012, 16:13 1 0
@Darac:- Not to offend you, but have ever played around with HTC one V? Try it. You'll notice the how "well" ICS performs on it. My friend bought it, and now he's having what is called as Buyers Remorse. I know Sony will provide an ICS update for my mobile, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna update it. I'm happy with GB; it does everything I want.
18. theBankRobber posted on 22 May 2012, 17:05 2 0
Um this article is WRONG.......... check the HTC source link, its says .... DEVICES WITH 512mb of ROM NOT RAM. that's why the Evo 4G is on this list. Its the amount of Rom built in not ram.
27. ngo2dd posted on 22 May 2012, 18:53 2 0
TheBankRobber is right according to the HTC website it said 512mb of Rom will not be get ICS and the PA said Ram. So PA is wrong
44. Victor.H posted on 23 May 2012, 01:53 0 0
Thanks for the good catch and sorry for the confusion, it's ROM (internal memory), not RAM. We've now corrected the article.

I still looking for word on if the HTC MyTouch 4G Slide will get the update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or not

I really wanted to wait for the next Motorola Photon LTE but given this I think I will get with the EVO LTE. HTC and Sony are probably the best OEM's when it comes to updates.
Motorola, get on the ball with ICS updates or this WILL hurt your business.
35. ngo2dd posted on 22 May 2012, 21:22 2 0
Hey Alan you need to rewrite your article because HTC website said ROM not Ram that is a huge different there.
36. phones522 posted on 22 May 2012, 21:45 0 0
I hope the EVO 3D gets an update sooner because if the virgin mbile version get it soon why cant the sprint version

Too late, the technical promise of Smart phones is dead and buried by the skyrocketing data cost to consumers. The IPhone was a flash in the pan. Rest In Peace.
Back to the days of text and voice... ha... take that VZW MOTO and HTC.
Oh yeah ,I have an HTC Flyer with 1GB of RAM and buggy official HTC Honeycomb that they will never fix.
46. PapaSmurf posted on 23 May 2012, 06:59 0 0
And it runs flawlessly. My only complaint is the browser... It gets laggy at times.
43. vaspvasp posted on 23 May 2012, 00:52 0 0
HTC cannot upgrade handsets with less than 512MB because HTC sense uses practically more than 600MB of internal memory!!!
