On second thought, AI might actually transform how we use our phones in the near future. Google has already previewed what that would be like with the conversational Ask Maps feature and Gemini-powered multi-step task handling. Now, Google Maps seems to be building toward something much more powerful.
Google Maps may soon order food for you

While digging through version 26.27.00.941319029 of Google Maps for Android, Android Authority came across code snippets suggesting the app will soon be able to order food while you are behind the wheel.
This looks like a work-in-progress feature. Strings like "Maps will order for you—even while you're on the go,""Order food," and "Try it out" suggest the app is moving beyond recommendations to handle the grunt work for you.
How will it work?
The exact mechanics are still under wraps, as the code only hints at how the app will introduce users to the feature. As development progresses, we can expect more clues to pop up. That's assuming Google doesn't abandon the project, since nothing is official just yet.
How much of a game-changer would this feature be?
Beyond basic research
With the Ask Maps feature, Google Maps gave users a first taste of conversing with the app like you would with a human. You can throw multifaceted queries at it, such as asking where to meet when your friends visit you after work for a quick bite, and the app will suggest a midway location based on past preferences, complete with a booking link.
With the rumored ordering feature, the app won't just draft a course of action. It will take matters into its own hands, letting you drive in peace while ensuring your food is ready the moment you pull up.
Delegating work
The Google Pixel 10 and Samsung Galaxy S26 lines can already use Gemini to take over certain apps for booking rides and ordering takeout. Clearly, Google has been laying the foundation for offloading tasks to AI.
Of course, it's still unclear how this will seamlessly integrate into Google Maps. We are guessing it will require permission to link with a food delivery app, which comes with its own risks.
