Samsung stopped building one Fold for everyone

For seven generations, Samsung fans only had one book-style Fold as an option, and if that tall, narrow shape did not suit you, your only other choice was a clamshell. However, that time is now over.

Samsung's announcement sorts the three phones into three jobs on purpose. The Ultra is pitched at productivity and content creation, the wide Fold 8 at viewing, reading and gaming, and the Flip 8 at quick interactions on the go.

How the Ultra earned the name

The Ultra is where the real engineering money went, and the numbers hold up. Its battery grew from 4,400 mAh on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to 5,000 mAh, roughly a 14% jump, in a body that got thinner rather than thicker.

Charging nearly doubled as well, going from 25 W to 45 W, which Samsung says covers 67% in about half an hour. Samsung has also confirmed a silicon-carbon cell for the new foldables, a battery type its Chinese rivals have been shipping for years.

One correction worth making, since the leaks were loud about it: the rumored 500 ppi inner screen did not happen. The official sheet lists 422 ppi, which is still a real jump, just not the one that was rumored.

What this changes if you already own a foldable

If you are on a Fold 7, this is the first generation in a while with a genuine reason to move, mostly on battery and charging rather than looks. If you are on a Fold 6 or older, the case is easier still.

If you have been eyeing the wider Fold 8 to save $200, know what you trade. It is the lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet at 201 g with a roomier 4:3 screen for video, but it drops to dual 50 MP cameras with no telephoto and a smaller 4,800 mAh battery.



And if you are an iPhone 17 Pro Max owner curious about folding phones, it also helps to be aware of what is happening with foldables on the Android side. Apple's first foldable is expected in September, so knowing where the market sits right now can only help inform your decision later in the year.

So which one is actually for you

The honest sorting is simpler than the spec sheets make it look, and it comes down to what you do with the phone rather than what you can afford.

• Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra: you multitask, edit and shoot, and you want the telephoto and the biggest battery
• Galaxy Z Fold 8: you mostly watch, read and game, and you want the lightest one to hold
• Galaxy Z Flip 8: you want a normal-sized phone that folds down small and gets out of the way

The part nobody put on the spec sheet

I went straight to the folded dimensions on both Folds because I have smaller hands and most flagships have quietly outgrown them. The Ultra is the narrow one at 72.8 mm across, but folded it also stands 158.4 mm tall, which is still a long stretch for my thumb.

The wide Fold 8 is the one that surprised me. Folded, it is 123.9 mm tall, about 35 mm shorter, so the top of the cover screen is genuinely reachable, though I am trading for a wider 81.9 mm body to get there.

That matters beyond hand size, of course. Women's clothing tends to come with tiny pockets, or no pockets at all, so a short, squat phone that a small bag will take without a fight is doing real work.

Pocketability without giving up screen has been the foldable promise since 2019, and at 201 g the wide Fold 8 gets the closest to it for me. That is what attracts me to it right now even with the camera downgrade, and it is a decent sign that Samsung's three-way split is doing what it set out to do.
