Vivo changes its mind, will manufacture the concept Apex phone in the middle of this year
At MWC last month, Vivo introduced a concept phone called the Apex. With a fingerprint scanner embedded under the lower half of the display, a pop-up 8MP selfie camera, and Screen SoundCasting Technology which allows sound to be emitted from the display, the Apex certainly has a lot of interesting and exciting features. It also sports extremely thin top and side bezels, and the hidden front-facing ambient and proximity sensors mean no notch is necessary.

Originally, the word in Barcelona was that the Apex was a concept phone, and the official video introducing the device says so in the small print on the bottom of the clip. But apparently, Vivo has changed its mind. Earlier this week at an event in China, the manufacturer said production of the handset will begin in the middle of this year. Under the hood you will find Qualcomm's current flagship Snapdragon 845 mobile platform.

Reportedly, the screen-to-body ratio for the Apex will be an impressive 91% with plans to bring that figure up to an amazing 98% in the future. One thing that Vivo might have to do first before selling the Apex, is work out a license deal with Essential; the latter owns a patent on the pop-up camera.

Although I don't care much about the selfie camera, I worry about the mechanism wearing out over time. However, I'd much rather see a design like this than a center notch any day.

I don't like the notches, but I'd rather that than this popup. Exactly as you said, the mechanism Will wear out if you keep the phone long enough.

I'd much rather have a notch in the corner of the device like one of the Mi Mix 2S renders leaked below. https://www.gsmarena.com/video_of_xiaomi_mi_mix_2s_confirms_the_selfie_camera_notch-news-29992.php There's another leak where it has the camera at the bottom which would be better than a pop-out camera too... https://www.androidheadlines.com/2018/03/notch-less-xiaomi-mi-mix-2s-render-real-life-images-appear.html If the first leak of the camera notch in the corner is correct and it has a uniform bezel around all 4 sides of the device (minus one upper corner), then I'll be wanting this device badly.

According to xda the camera will remain at the bottom of the Mi Mix 2.

This article counteracts that. Honestly who knows which report is correct. We'll just have to wait until March 27th to see this beast. https://www.phonearena.com/news/Xiaomi-Mi-Mix-2S-leaks-in-a-video-with-notch-for-the-front-camera-wireless-charging_id103096

Me either, just a matter of principle. I'd rather not have something that adds another obvious point of failure.

Vivo will never officially launch in the USA. No need to license anything from anyone. They will forever, offer most lte bands from t mobile and AT&T so anyone here can import that uses those carriers

I think Blu from Florida is rebranding Vivo phones and selling them in the States.

You won't. I've sold quite a few vivo phones here since 2014. Every single one of my customers have praised the build quality. Never had one returned because of hardware issues. Never. I would be out of business if vivo phones failed as frequent as the other major brands.

Find it awefully tyrannical that some company can patent the general concept of a camera that pops out of the side of a device. I could get the electro/mechanical/software control specifics being patented...but the general concept being patented is like patenting any and all "locking pliers" designs. You know how much vise-grips would be worth now if they could have did that. These new tech companies somehow get away with patenting concepty type idea things in ways that are just tyrannical.

No, they didn't say this phone will be produced this year. What they said was some technologies presented on this phone will go into mass production middle of this year. Which means we will see some other phones with some technology on this one.

Vivo had a press conference on the 5th of this month to introduce this phone sometime this year

Yes, they had a press conference. And no, this phone is not going to be mass produced, just some of its technologies (and not all). How did I know? Because I can read Chinese, all Chinese websites are saying the same thing, including the source link PA included in their article.

Essential should work out a deal for them to help manufacture their next flagship in exchange for them using the design for their own in Asian markets.
