We are literally just a week away from the Galaxy Unpacked event where Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8. While we've been hearing a lot about the hardware and feature upgrades of the foldables from different sources, not much has been shared about the Flip model. A recent leak regarding the Flip 8 apparently makes it clear why the rumor market about it has been comparatively very silent all along.
There's not much to look forward to
Roland Quandt is a well-known tipster with a history of sharing accurate information about product specifications before their official launch. He recently shared details about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Flip 8. The surprising, or better yet, the least exciting piece of info among both the upcoming phones was about the Flip model.
The new device is reported to cost 198,000 won (around $130 via direct conversion) more than last year's Flip model. Coming back to the SoC, it's also not of the highest grade, as that is reportedly reserved for the foldables. Roland reports that the Flip 8 would be powered by the Exynos 2600 chipset, which is used in the vanilla S26.
However, there are also rumors that the tech giant might decide to go with the regional split strategy for the processors in order to save production costs. In some regions, the device would feature the Exynos 2600, whereas in other regions it might run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

If Roland's report is indeed accurate, and the Flip phone is only getting a processor upgrade, then it's quite easy to guess the exact details of the device. Starting with the screen: it could be a 6.9-inch foldable OLED display that will support a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The outer screen could be a Super AMOLED panel that will have a dimension of 4.1 inches.
The phone could have a dual camera setup at the back, with the main shooter being 50 MP and the other being a 12 MP ultra-wide lens. In the front, you could get a 10 MP sensor for taking beautiful selfies. Lastly, it could have the same 4,300 mAh battery.
Will you still get the Galaxy Z Flip 8 if the SoC is the only change?
Many crucial upgrades might remain exclusive to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 phones
I recently reported about two very important upgrades that could be part of all three smartphones that Samsung is going to launch at its upcoming event. First is the use of an anti-reflective coating, and the second one is boosting the wireless charging speed from 15 W to 20 W.
It was expected that Samsung would bring both these changes to all three phones it is about to launch. But if you go by Roland's report that only the SoC is getting upgraded, then it wouldn't be wrong to assume that both these crucial additions could remain exclusive to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
A lot was expected from Samsung
The Galaxy Z Flip 7, which was launched last year, came with some noticeable upgrades over its predecessor. For instance, in our in-house testing, we found its battery life to be slightly better than that of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The reason behind this is definitely the extra 300 mAh capacity that you get in the Flip 7.
However, it's not that the device was perfect in all departments. Users report on public forums like Reddit that the camera quality of the phone isn't as good as that of other Samsung flagship phones. There are also reports of the phone getting hot while using its camera.

We personally had two main complaints with the device: its speaker was very average, and the Exynos 2500 chip was not able to deliver flagship-grade performance. While the Flip 8 might address the performance concerns thanks to the use of the Exynos 2600 SoC, other complaints like average camera performance might also remain untouched.
Samsung has treated its Flip phones like this always
It would definitely not be the first time we would see Samsung launching its Flip phone with almost no upgrades over its previous model. The company has followed this strategy with its Flip devices almost since their inception. However, since there are rumors that the Galaxy Z Flip 8 could be the last Flip series phone from Samsung, I had very high expectations from it.
Your votes also suggest that most of you would buy the Galaxy Z Flip 8 if it actually turns out to be the last flip ever. But will you still go for it now after knowing that the only upgrade you can get is the use of a new processor? I, personally, won't. More details about the phone would be shared at the Galaxy Unpacked event, which is scheduled for July 22nd.
