However, a reliable tipster now claims that the device is going to launch only in China, leaving India in the cold.
OnePlus 16 may skip India
Yogesh Brar, who has a solid track record when it comes to smartphone-related leaks, recently made a post on X claiming that OnePlus could follow a different strategy for India next year. According to him, the brand would launch the OnePlus 16R as the flagship phone in India instead of the OnePlus 16. In the mid-range department, it will come up with the new Nord lineup, and we could also see the launch of new affordable N-series phones.

It's not the first time we're hearing this
Brar is not the first tipster who has claimed that the OnePlus 16 might not launch in India. Another well-known leaker, Debayan Roy, made a post almost two months ago claiming that the OnePlus 16 and the Oppo Find X10 Ultra are not officially coming to the Indian markets.
Although there is no official confirmation on this, if the tech giant indeed decides not to launch its upcoming flagship in India, then that would mean that the phone would be China-exclusive. I, personally, believe that this would be a massive step from the company, especially since a major portion of its smartphone sales comes from India after its home market.

What to expect from the OnePlus 16R?
Compared to its respective numbered OnePlus flagship, the R series model features a less powerful chipset and camera. However, it does come with a slightly bigger battery. For comparison, the OnePlus 15 has a 7300 mAh battery, but the OnePlus 15R ships with a 7400 mAh cell.
Furthermore, the brand follows an interesting strategy for its R-series devices. They're generally the rebranded versions of China-exclusive OnePlus devices. For instance, the OnePlus 13R is the rebranded version of a China-exclusive device, the OnePlus Ace 5. Similarly, the OnePlus 15R is based on the OnePlus Ace 6T.
If the smartphone maker decides to continue with the same approach, then the OnePlus 16R could be based on the Ace 7 lineup. However, no details about this series have surfaced to date. That's why we can't say what specifications you could expect from the OnePlus 16R.
The OnePlus 16 looks like a great phone
Many specifications of the OnePlus 16 have leaked to date, and honestly, all look great. Starting with the display, the phone is rumored to support a refresh rate of up to 165 Hz in all conditions, and the screen would use a custom-designed X4 luminescent material from BOE that will make the phone brighter than its predecessor. The main camera is believed to be 200 MP, whereas both the telephoto and ultra-wide lenses are rumored to be 50 MP shooters.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro is reportedly going to power the smartphone, and the reported 9000 mAh battery would allow the phone to live up to the long-lasting battery life reputation created by the OnePlus 15. The sad news is that the phone, which could give tough competition to the Pixel 11, iPhone 18, and the Galaxy S27, is not going to launch in the West. And if the current rumor is true, Indian fans may not get the chance either to officially purchase such a spectacular smartphone.
