If you're not living under a rock, then you must be aware that OnePlus has already launched its latest flagship, the OnePlus 16 in China. Now, it might soon make its way to the global market as well.
It's already confirmed that the OnePlus 16 is not coming to North America and Europe, as the company has stopped its operations in these regions. That just leaves India, where the brand officially operates. However, many popular sources like Yogesh Brar and Debayan Roy have previously claimed that the flagship isn't launching in the Indian market.
Instead, the company could follow a different strategy for the Indian consumers by launching OnePlus 16R. For reference, the R series models are usually the affordable version of their respective flagship. For instance, the OnePlus 15R was launched in the US for $699, whereas its flagship brother, the OnePlus 15 entered the market at $999.
Although previous reports suggested uncertainty regarding the OnePlus 16 release in India, a latest report indicates that the launch could actually happen. A highly trusted tipster, Abhishek Yadav, recently made a post on X mentioning that OnePlus recently held a meeting in Mumbai, which is considered the financial capital of India, regarding the launch of the OnePlus 16 in the country.
The tipster even mentioned that the device is being tested privately behind closed doors. Another leakster, Debayan Roy, also made a post a week ago mentioning that one of his highly reliable sources has confirmed to him that the tech giant is soon going to launch two smartphones in India, one of them is almost confirmed to be the OnePlus 16.
The OnePlus 16 was released in China at CNY 5,699 (~ $852). I, personally, believe $900 is a decent amount for a smartphone that offers a 9000 mAh battery, a 100 W wired and a 50 W wireless charging support, an 185 Hz refresh rate display panel, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor, and many other killer specifications. However, many are speculating that the device could launch in the Indian market at an insanely high price, which even its top specifications could not justify.
One user commented under Abhisek Yadav that the phone could cost up to ₹120,000 - 130,000 in India (~ $1,383). Even the tipster Debayan mentioned in his post that the price of the handset would be high, predicting a cost of up to ₹140,000 (~$1,490).
Notably, we are talking about the base 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage variant. The ultra-high-end model featuring 1 TB storage and 16 GB RAM could cost even more. A user under a Reddit post commented that it could be priced at ₹200,000 (~ $2130).
For comparison, the OnePlus 15 launched in India for ₹85,000 (~ $900). So, we would see a price increase of almost 53% over the last year's model if OnePlus launches its latest flagship in India at ₹130,000. The ongoing memory crisis is the primary reason for such a massive price increase.
Despite rumors that OnePlus 16 might not officially come to India, I had a strong feeling that the device is indeed going to come in the country. The reason behind this is that after China, India is one of the biggest smartphone markets for the company, even though the company reportedly holds only 1.7% of the Indian smartphone market share.
I, personally, was looking to upgrade my Pixel 10 to the OnePlus 16, but looking at its ridiculously high price estimates, I think I would have to cancel my plan. Anyway, I'm really eager to know what price OnePlus will set for the OnePlus 16 in India, or even if it'll actually release the device over here at all, since there's no official confirmation on it yet.
