iPhone Duo owners discover another quirk with the hinge

It seems like the iPhone Duo still has some surprises up its hinge.

If you feel resistance when unfolding your iPhone Duo, you should probably close it back up and take it to an Apple store immediately. There are numerous anecdotes online about how this resistance is followed by a loud pop and the cracking of the inner display if you keep trying to unfold the iPhone Duo with greater force.

However, now a new quirk related to this appears to have cropped up. It seems like the iPhone Duo and its less-than-stellar construction still have some stories left to tell. Though, on this occasion, it’s not all bad news apparently.

Sometimes, the iPhone Duo just fixes itself

In a bizarre turn of events, one iPhone Duo user regaled us with a tale about how their iPhone Duo apparently brought itself back from the brink of disaster. Before this, the user had been consciously trying to use their Duo just like a normal phone and not worrying about it too much, despite the countless incidents of broken units that they were very aware of.

The iPhone Duo in question was accidentally dropped onto a hard floor a couple of days ago. When it was picked back up and its owner tried to unfold it, they felt the resistance in the hinge that they had been reading about ever since the Duo’s launch.

At first, they did what I would recommend you do too in a similar situation, they closed the iPhone Duo and started planning a trip to an Apple store. However, an hour in, this user decided they would open their iPhone Duo anyway.

The resistance persisted until a loud noise, as expected. However, when the Duo was unfolded fully following that, it turned out to be completely fine.

The user even checked the display crease for a bulge, another symptom of an iPhone Duo that is about to crack, but there was none. Their iPhone Duo had gone back to normal all by itself.

Others have experienced this as well

What makes this ordeal noteworthy is that, apparently, this isn’t the only iPhone Duo that has done this. Other iPhone Duo users shared how they had experienced exactly the same thing with their own phone.

As it turns out, some iPhone Duos do get something dislodged in their hinge and are prone to cracking like many others but the piece slots itself back in. These iPhone Duos might have the same defect as the units that break, but they were either handled with more care or their defect wasn’t as bad.

Others, rightfully in my opinion, pointed out that you shouldn’t have to look after a phone this much. Just worrying all the time about it breaking is enough to sap all of the excitement of getting it in the first place out of you.

Though Apple says that only a few units have run into this problem, the daily posts of more broken iPhone Duos prove otherwise. In addition, one customer wasn’t even able to get their Duo repaired because requests for repairs and replacements are apparently too high for Apple to keep up with.

I would have never bought the iPhone Duo

Before its release, I kept harping on about how you should probably avoid the iPhone Duo just because of the fact that it’s a first-generation product. Obviously, sales numbers show that most people were not of the same mind.

However, especially now with all of the reports that have come out about the iPhone Duo’s problems, I would be staying far, far away from it. I would never buy a phone that starts at $2,000 and can decide to just break whenever it feels like it. And, frankly speaking, I wouldn’t have the patience to keep babying it all day long for years.

The iPhone Duo isn't a dream purchase for many:
