RIP, OnePlus: the company might be done with this type of phone

The company might be focusing on domestic production for the future, but here's the fine print.

Saying "Rest in peace, OnePlus!" twice in the same year—twice in any period of time, to be precise—wasn't something I necessarily planned. Usually, saying it one time is enough.

The first "RIP!" came, of course, about four months ago, when the rumors about OnePlus' eventual pullout of global markets got so thick they couldn't be denied. The company stopped beating around the bush and we learned that OnePlus will forget about the US and Europe and focus on its homeland, China.

Another "RIP!"

Now, the rumor mill has something to say about OnePlus' near future: apparently, there won't be a successor to the OnePlus 15T.

The rumor goes a bit further than just that. Allegedly, OnePlus will ditch making compact phones altogether.

So it's not just that you'd have to (assuming you live outside China) deal with expensive, time-consuming overseas shipping and import fees if you wanted a compact OnePlus phone. If the aforementioned rumor holds true, you'll simply be unable to do so even if you're ready to embark on that e-store adventure.

And that's a shame.

Compact phones matter

The OnePlus 15T was a petite powerhouse: a high-end chipset with a huge 7,500 mAh battery with fast charging. Everything (including a 50 MP telephoto with optical image stabilization) was crammed under a 6.3-inch display.

I'm personally used to ~7-inch handsets and I like what a big screen offers me, but the idea of ditching the 6.3-inch phone is depressing.

Some people can't stand big phones, but some people have small hands and it's obvious why they'd want something under 6.5 inches in terms of display panel.

The wide screen obsession

It might be that OnePlus will bless us with another phone soon—and if rumors are to be believed—this could very well be a wide-screened non-foldable phone.

You see, wider-than-taller foldables like the iPhone Duo (Apple's first foldable iPhone) and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 took over the fans' hearts left and right. Some companies (like Xiaomi) were quick to adopt the same aspect ratio, but, as a matter of fact, Huawei's Pura X Max was first to the stage. But it's Huawei, so people outside China don't pay that much attention.
