OnePlus leaving the Wester smartphone markets was already one of the worst news this year, but the company hasn’t stopped launching new devices. Following the OnePlus 16 premiere, the company has announced the OnePlus Ace 7 and Ace 7 Pro in China, and they’ll make you dream of a US release.

OnePlus Ace 7 and Ace 7 Pro announced with flagship specs and active cooling

OnePlus just announced the new Ace 7 series, which consists of two models with specs that make them feel like aimed at gamers. The Ace 7 and Ace 7 Pro share most of their key specs, including the 9,000 mAh batteries, 185Hz displays, 200MP main cameras, and active cooling fans.

Where the two phones differ is in the chipset and the secondary camera. The Ace 7 comes with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series chipset, which has a slightly less powerful GPU than the 8 Elite Gen 5, found in the Ace 7 Pro. The vanilla model also features an 8MP ultra-wide camera, while the Pro goes with a 50MP telephoto shooter.

There’s no third camera because the camera bump also houses the phone’s cooling system. The fan has a dual-airflow design, which OnePlus claims helps it provide temperature reduction of up to 10 degrees Celsius while gaming. Despite the fan, the two devices come with IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K.

One of these could be the OnePlus 16R

Over the last few years, the OnePlus Ace series was the base for the company’s international R models, so there’s a chance that the Ace 7 could launch as OnePlus 16R in the near future. Even if that’s to happen, there’s a zero chance for such a device to ever arrive in the US.

Even if that were to happen, this model would’ve probably come at a very steep price. The Ace 7 starts at CNY 4,399 (about $660 when directly converted), while the Ace 7 Pro is CNY 4,799 (about $720 when directly converted).

While these numbers may sound great in dollars, they present about a 70% price increase from last year’s base model. The starting price of the OnePlus Ace 6 in China was only CNY 2,599 (roughly $390 when directly converted), with the top-of-the-line model with 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM reaching CNY 3,899, or barely $585 when directly converted.

The initial reactions online were split between awe about the cooling fans and disappointment with the price. Users on Reddit were baffled by the increase, with some of them expressing hopes that an international launch wouldn’t make it even more expensive.

We need more competition

It’s a bummer that we’re stuck with the same type of devices, while folks in China have such a variety of options. I’m not a mobile gamer, and I don’t think I’d buy a smartphone with a fan, but I’d still like to have the option available. Not because I’d use it, but because the competition would force the rest of the phones to also get better.
