iPhone Ultra leak reveals a drawback that might be hard to live with

The iPhone Ultra's front design might be unsightly.

The iPhone Ultra might be tempting enough to capture 25% market share in its first few months, but that doesn't mean it will be without its shortcomings. One quirk pointed out by a leaker isn't a flaw per se, but might turn off a few buyers anyway.

Strange design choice

According to leaker Instant Digital, the iPhone Ultra's rounded corners leave it with an asymmetrical front display.

While the outer edges are rounded, the hinge center unsurprisingly remains flat. As a result, when folded, one side looks rounded, while the other appears almost angular.

Since the display itself curves at the edges, there is some unused black space on the left.

Hard to unsee

It's the kind of thing you might miss at first, but can't unsee once you spot it. The asymmetry, paired with the visible bezels and a punch-hole cutout, gives the front a strangely disjointed look.

But why?

Apple is famous for sleek aesthetics, making it hard to fathom how such an awkward design made the cut. The thing is, Apple's foldable has rounded corners, which should make it comfortable to hold. The trade-off is this uneven design.

Then again, since this is a foldable device, you will probably spend most of your time using it unfurled. Even in the folded state, the asymmetry might stop mattering after a few days. We all forgot about the notch eventually, so users might grow to tolerate this too.

The real drawbacks

A bit of dead screen space is hardly a dealbreaker, especially when the iPhone Ultra will have plenty of actual compromises to keep you distracted.

Despite its rumored $2,300 price tag, the device will neither have Face ID nor a telephoto camera. It may also skip MagSafe and the Action Button.

We should find out for sure on September 9, which is when the device will likely be announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro duo.
