Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 models proved quite successful, but that doesn't mean their successors will deliver major upgrades across the board. In fact, one key area may remain surprisingly similar to what we have on this year's foldable phones.
According to the latest supply chain rumors, Samsung may be considering keeping the cameras on its upcoming high-end Z Fold models identical to what we have on the Z Fold 8 and the Z Fold 8 Ultra.
But is that as bad as it sounds?

According to leaker Lanzuk, the upcoming book-like foldables from Samsung may not feature more capable cameras. This decision reportedly won't affect just the successor to the brand's first-ever passport-style device but also the Z Fold 9 Ultra.
That could mean the 'standard' Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra may retain the same 200MP main, 50MP ultra-wide, and 10MP 3x zoom cameras as its predecessor. Reportedly, Samsung won't just avoid bumping up the megapixels but also keep the sensors identical to what we have on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
As for the Galaxy Z Fold 9, it might stick with the 50MP main and 50MP ultra-wide cameras of the Z Fold 8.
I should point out that nothing is set in stone yet. Given that the Z Fold 9 models aren't expected to launch before summer 2027, it might be a bit too early to take these rumors at face value.

What about this mysterious new foldable?
In case you missed it, Lanzuk recently shared details about a possible Galaxy Z Fold 9 Plus or FE-like phone that might launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 9. At this stage, we have no additional details about this mysterious foldable, but if the company opts for a "Plus" variant (supposedly a model with higher-end specs), that could give it some leeway to explore camera improvements.

We've posted a number of camera samples in our Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra review, so you can better estimate what the current foldables are capable of. To me, both models capture good-looking photos in different scenarios. And while they're definitely not the best camera phones, they're far from disappointing.
Here's what my colleague Rad says about the Ultra foldable's camera:
My opinion is that it’s a capable and dependable camera that you can count on to produce great shots in a wide variety of circumstances; however, I wouldn’t really call it an “ultra” camera at this point.
Rad Slavov, Z Fold 8 Ultra review, August 2026
So, at first glance, you may think keeping the same camera hardware on the upcoming Z Fold models sounds frustrating. But the reality is that if the South Korean tech giant introduces some meaningful software enhancements, the lack of actual hardware upgrades may not be all that bad.
As I see it, keeping the same cameras may even turn out to be good news, especially if it helps Samsung keep the price unchanged for next year's foldables.
