Twitter improves its mobile site, makes it 'featurephone friendly'

Statistics released today show that more than half of all mobile handsets used in the U.S. are smartphones. But that would indicate that there are still quite a few featurephone users out there and even they are entitled to an easy Twitter experience. That is why the latter has updated its mobile site, "in an effort to give every person on the planet a consistent Twitter experience". Twitter says the site will now be easier for those using a low-bandwidth network or an older-browser.

The updated mobile.twitter.com site will let you see all the tweets from those you follow and even get a look at your @mentions in the connect tab. Under the Discover tab you can check to see what's trending and the Me tab will reveal direct messages and tweets. The mobile Twitter site now runs fast and uses only one-third of the bandwidth than the prior version of the site.

Featurephone users are people too, so we're happy to see Twitter make this move. Still, the writing is on the wall and we wouldn't be surprised to see smartphones continue to capture more of the overall U.S. mobile handset market by the end of the year.
