Samsung beats Apple for the US market share crown, but S8 not in the top three

Samsung has climbed up to the top in US market share in the three-month period that ended in May, says research shop Kantar, as often happens in this weak for Apple and strong for Samsung quarter, given that the Koreans launch their flagships in the spring, while Apple does it in the fall. Still, while Samsung reached 36.2% market share this past quarter, and Apple sits at 34%, Samsung's achievement is still a bit shy from what it managed to pull off last year in the same period with the S7 and S7 edge.

"The Galaxy S8 launch helped Samsung regain the top position in the USA, but the bounce from the flagship launch was less than would be expected from a full product redesign," tips Kantar's Dominic Sunnebo. Apple and Samsung account for virtually all of the top 10 best-selling phones in the US, and are evenly split with five models each, while the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, Galaxy S7 and S8 occupy the top 4 places on this side of the pond. As for the LG G6, well, it has managed to score just 1.3% of the market so far.

Not surprising, the iPhone 8/7S launch is just around the corner, most likely people are just waiting.

Well according to industry analysts, iPhone 8 will have disappointing sales in 2018 due to delay in launch. Now many people in the US and other major markets are buying iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, Galaxy S8, so it is quite unlikely people will buy a new device in short span of time (3-4 months).

It literally happens every year, but they report it as something new. Samsung should be worried about why it's flagship is not selling better than the old model! I don't care how long it was on sale in the quarter.

Samsung's old flagship was such a great device that there is no reason for people in general to upgrade to s8 / s8+ . Even iphone 6s did not sell as good as iphone 6. But iphone 7 was more successful than iphone 6s. Because people have a reason to upgrade to iphone 7.

Let me guess, if some reports say that the S8 is selling better than the S7, you wont believe them, yet when they say otherwise, you'll believe them? The thing is, these reports are inconsistent. Until we get actual numbers, don't go out telling people about S8 vs S7 sales.

Again you aren't looking at the following facts: 1st - the S7bdid better in sales due to the Note 7 issue. Many held on to the Note 7 until th3 S7 came out, because the S8 was only weeks away vs buying a phone that was gonna be a year old. Since many did opt for an S7 edge already, rhey wont qualify for an upgrade on any program to get an S8, because all Jump and a forever plans require a 50% payoff of the phone to upgrade. So many people Re not eligible to get an S8 at all. In fact, S7 sales increased by 15M+ in the last quarter of 2016, so at least 15M people can't get an S8.

Soon the world will be torn between having a classy phone or a classy productive one. The choice belongs to the consumer.

Actually their is no choice to make, because the S and Note are both classy and productive. The iPhone is a little classy and a little productive.

And Apple will beat Samsung for the 4th and 1st quarters and Samsung will beat Apple for the 2nd and 3rd quarters and the cycle will continue until one of them stumbles badly.

Agree 100% it their time now but one day both will be a shadow of themselves as some new tech ( portable transporters or Matter replicators like on star Trek) comes along to capture our minds and wallets. Both will become like Microsoft and Intel and then like Nokia and Blackberry. But as fro now let them enjoy their time in the sun.

Samsung came back from the Note 7 fiasco. Gotta give them and BB credit.

Nope! Sales for Samsung are down YOY and we have yet to see what the Note does. If the S8 is a measuring stick, it won't do well. The S8 was not a hit dude. The S7 is still selling more. That's terrible considering all the tech media hype of the S8. I told you it was just a S7 with a stretched and a Teri le location for the FPS!

You know that was said about the S7 duo right? Articles, here on PA, of analyst saying that the S7 was a failure and not selling like the S6 before it. Samsung's YoY profits being down. Then after the Note 7 issues articles implying Samsung is dead and will go out of the mobile market Yet here we are ( or you are ) saying the S7 is selling more. The same thing holds for Apple -we always hear that the Apple is on a decline and the last model did not sell as well and yet Apple and Samsung are always the top mobile device manufactures.

The S8 sold 15% above S7 levels. It did just fine.

What is your basis that s7 is selling better? This Kantar data? Keep in mind that S8 was available for only 5 weeks of the quarter being reported on. Also keep in mind that Samsung themselves have said s8 is performing better than s7.

They werw never down, because rhw S7 in rease salws bwcause of rhe Note 7. Please stop saying rhat because if what you said was true, they woukd have sold 300M phones last year and they wouldn't be doing it this year

Authentic question. 'but S8 not in the top three' or 'but S8 is not in the top three'?

S7 still hot. Me liking it.

It would be quite a feat for the S8 to beat all other top sellers while only being available the second half of the quoted 3 month period and in limited supply (not even all carriers, unlocked wasn't even available yet). Let's use a bit of common sense when looking at statistics.
