Rollout of the Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA update for the Exynos-based Galaxy S5 has started
Samsung began the rollout of the latest and hottest update to Android – 5.0 Lollipop – for the Galaxy S5 in its homeland of South Korea back in December, and the new firmware is still spreading throughout the world. What started out as a crawl is expected to transition into a leisurely jog soon, and that's welcome news for some Galaxy S5 owners. Why some? Because the new software was only available for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801-based model of the device. The Exynos 5422 flavor was left out.
As of earlier today, however, Samsung has began the first rollout phase for the Exynos variant and is now seeding the Lollipop update to Galaxy S5 units in Kazakhstan. Yes, you read that right – for the time being, Kazakhs are the only people on the planet who get to enjoy the major update on their Exynos S5. Don't lose faith, though, for over-the-air updates always come out in phases – the manufacturer first pushes the update to a relatively tiny portion of device owners to ensure that it didn't miss any critical issues during internal testing, and only then starts to slowly up the ante. So long as no serious problems pop up, we expect other regions to get the update within the next month or two.
