Petition asks Sony to update the Sony Xperia SP with Android 4.4

Petition asks Sony to update the Sony Xperia SP with Android 4.4
The Sony Xperia SP was at one time listed on Sony's support site as being pretty much a sure thing to be updated to Android 4.4. But that has changed ever since the phone received Android 4.3 in an update sent out last month. The very next day, the handset's status in relation to KitKat was "Under Investigation," which certainly makes the update to Android 4.4 seem up in the air. And that has upset a few owners of the device, which was released about 11 months ago. So far, 176 people have signed a petition on Change.org asking Sony to update the Xperia SP to Android 4.4. The petition, which is out of India, has a goal of 200 supporters.

Considering that KitKat was designed to run on some lower spec'd devices with 512MB of RAM, the Sony Xperia SP should have no problems. The phone features a 4.6 inch screen with 720 x 1280 resolution, and there is a dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU under the hood. With 1GB of RAM on board, the Xperia SP should be able to handle the chocolatey goodness of Android 4.4.

Keep in mind that Sony hasn't said that the device won't get the update. The Japanese manufacturer has merely said that it will need to take a look at the phone before making a decision. Previously, as we alluded to above, Sony had said that Android 4.4 would be the next OS version for the model. If you want to sign the petition, you can click on the sourcelink below.

Thanks for the tip!

11 months? What a pity.. I find it funny that Nokia lumia 920 which is more than a year old will still get the windows phone 8.1 update..

Same happened with WP older devices.

I truly believe that older 6.x and 7.x device are way too old to get WP 8.. They will naturally be left out.. Xperia SP is not even a year old and users of it will be left with nothing..

Those devices cant handle WP8. As for Sony, SP was a best seller. They've done it in the past. They usually dont update devices that sells better as they want consumers to buy new phones instead.

920 didn't have anything to begin with, except for the hardware. What it will get with Windows Phone 8.1 should have been available for it when it released.

Now that the 920 will get the most awaited update for WP you are now ranting about how it should have been loaded with the same features when it was first launched.. Perhaps you could wish for a WP that can teleport you to another dimension so that you can say that WP are capable devices..

Read again. That is not a rant. It appears as a rant because you too feel that 8.1 should have come a long time ago. I was responding to a comparison between Xperia SP and Lumia 920, which projected Xperia SP's software to be at a disadvantage compared to Windows Phone running 920. which is not the case.

if OS is good then why it needs 4.4.1, 4.4.2 and soon 4.4.3 after major 4.4???

Seriously, those SP owners who signed the petition just don't know what's going on, they just want the update. Sony is known for having half baked software with a lot of bugs, I think Sony changed it to "Under Investigation" is because they're trying their best to get rid of the bugs so that the owners can have a good experience on KitKat. If Sony roll out the update directly that has a lot of bugs, those peoples will get mad at Sony and whining for a bug fix update. I really don't know what those people are thinking, why not just do other useful things instead of wasting time on begging Sony for the update?

Well I flashed the latest firmware on my unbranded Z1, that being KITKAT and there are some bugs reported, the firmware was released sooner than expected but as you said it could be better "baked", Personaly, after a factory reset I just miss the "Clear all" on Multitasking menu, in spite of missing "tap to wake, 4k video," and some other Z2 features that I hope will be released after Z2 goes on sale. As for Xperia SP and T, they should by all means get KK, they are more than capable to run it. Also, I'm planning to get a SP as well

You're right they have no idea or what so ever that sony is still looking into SP wether it can handle kitkat or possibly a bug would appear once update is done. I think sony is just taking precaution on updates.

I really hope so, it'd bring life to all these good devices ;)

You're right. My bro has an SP and when he updated to 4.3 it had a few bugs but then Sony said that the OS needs to "settle". He would open an app then all the main apps would start crashing all at once. It really annoyed him but now its ok. :)

Bug fix huh ? I think i heard the same thing about bug fixing when Xperia SP 4.3 got delayed for whole two months. But still, here we are, looking at some silly bugs(volume slider graphic bug when using custom themes, uninstallation graphic bug from settings->apps, white balance settings restored to default when phone is rebooted, low ram problem and etc etc etc....) and begging Sony for a bug fix. The thing you have missed sir, is that, Sony will always be known for having half baked software with a lots of bugs, no matter how much they delay the update. Its the truth. I don't have high hopes for Kitkat update. I just want a perfect bug fix update on 4.3 first so that i can actually go by a day when i don't have to reboot my phone for low ram problem. I am not blaming Sony for anything. I just blame Sony's software team because they just suck at rom testing, optimizing and bug fixing. That's all ! - A disappointed Xperia Sp user !

I need this update, the sp is more powerfull than some phones with kitkat and the latest 4.3 update for us is crappy

One of the biggest problems I know for sure is android 4.4 doesn't allow moving apps to SD card for the security. And SP only have 8GB internal storage, which has to be shared with heavy Sony's OS and Apps from Carriers etc... so the left-over (usable) storage is very very limited. And the SD card is not always helpful !

Manufacturers can override those permissions, if they chose to

"If they chose to" - Which in Sony's case is a negative sir. They will not provide apps to sd feature in kitkat, as they have not provided it in 4.1 and 4.3 jellybean. Because it will prevent satisfied Xperia SP users to switch to other phones. Makes sense ? It should :)

I can't believe how ridiculous you lot are being. You just received 4.3 and now your begging for 4.4? If anything I hope you lot don't get the update, stop being greedy. Ask for a bug free 4.3 not a half arsed 4.4 bloody hell.
