Motorola DROID Turbo gets soak test prior to Android 6.0 update

Some owners of the Motorola DROID Turbo who also are members of the Motorola Feedback Network, have received an email trying to recruit them for an upcoming soak test. Those accepting the invitation will be able to install a new software build on their DROID Turbo while Motorola monitors how well the software works on the device prior to its release.

Only members of the Motorola Feedback Network are allowed to participate in a soak test. Those who do agree to take part in the testing must agree not to talk to the media about it.

The Motorola DROID Turbo was launched in late 2014 with Android 4.4.4 on board. It did receive the update to Android 5.1 in July 2015.  Last summer, there was talk that the Turbo would be updated to Android 6.0. With that in mind, we believe that this soak test is being done to see how Android 6.0 runs on the former flagship phone. If everything goes smoothly, it won't be too long before the Verizon exclusive is running the Marshmallow build of Android.

There is one bit of bad news here for DROID Turbo owners. Since the device is not expected to be updated to Android 7.0, this is the end of the line in terms of Android updates for the model.

It'd be nice, but the original Turbo is not slated to get Nougat.

Nougat ROMs are available on XDA for the turbo. CM14 is running on mine

So how does one do this and what is the risk of it bricking your phone?

That's the beauty of the Android community! Side note for the article: a Soak Test is not a Beta Test. Completely different steps in the development process.

Only took Motorola forever to release it. I'm running 7.0 on my Droid Turbo right now with CM14 and will have a 7.1.1 build by early next week

Droid Turbo already has Nougat 7.0 custom ROM. The dev says he's updating it to 7.1 next week. Plus we have at least 8 custom Marshmallow ROMs.

True that devs have had MM out for some time, but I, disgrudgingly, stepped down to 5.1 because of lack of simultaneous data. Its annoying. So, I'm very glad to have an official MM rom, hopefully to be followed up by a CM MM rom with volte.

Tossing my hat in the ring with XDA too. No reason to wait for Moto & Verizon to finally "bless" a once-flagship exclusive to a current OS. XDA FTW!!!
