Microsoft Stores giving away free Windows Phones this weekend

Microsoft Stores giving away free Windows Phones this weekend
If you were thinking of hitting the mall this weekend, take a trip by the Microsoft Store, or Specialty Store, as each location is giving away 8 Windows Phones on Saturday, May 3rd, and 8 on Sunday, May 4th.

The giveaways are part of the “Opportunity Rings Instant Win” promotion being held at all the Microsoft Stores in the US. That’s the mysterious part, we do not really understand how the phones will be given away. There is no mention of the criteria the stores may be looking at for someone to become a lucky winner.

There is also no mention of what devices may be given away either. We do not want to presume it would be based on your carrier. Since Microsoft now owns Nokia Devices, one would think the stores would be giving away Lumia devices. However, if you are a Windows Phone user or Sprint customer, you would be out of luck in that regard since that carrier only sells the Samsung ATIV S Neo and HTC 8XT

If you are fortunate enough to live near one of Microsoft’s 80 or so retail locations, you might be a lucky winner.

Wow! Desperate times, desperate measures. They will really try anything to move those phones. Only 8 per store is really only a gimmick. How

Name one company that doesn't give away free stuff? The oneplusone and Droid must be desperate to give away phones for $1.....

I was looking up how many stores Microsoft currently has in the US. They have 86 stores times 8 devices per store, turns out to be only 688 devices in total. If Microsoft gives the 520 away at a cost of $50 per unit to Microsoft. Works out to be $34,400. This really is trying to get people in to look at WP. Its not only a gimmick, its chump change to Microsoft. It makes Microsoft look good for so little.

When they find out its running WP they would sell it and by an Android phone Majority of ex Nokia users loved Symbian for its open platform, but this strict closed platform will drive them crazy

I doubt they'll be able to find someone to buy it.

it is closed, and at the same time it just works. Funny thing is in the last few months WP has gotten 40 users cause of me. Most of them could care less what OS it is running (majority of customers i deal with daily), and just want a working phone. I have owned solid droids, and well not so solid, i have now owned as many wp devices as droids, total being 14. I have exchanged one wp to date, while i have had to exchange my note 3 twice. I have had the crap droids, and the lovely droids (s3 my fav), but what is the point of having custom roms if you have to rely on the mod community (a damn good one at that) that can drop the ball on any beloved rom, worrying about patches to fix 'oop crashes'. Or keyboards that have killed google.process for no reason. Point being i loved customizing my droid, but in the end i was babysitting droids (still do) more than any other OS out there.

Not really. Not as open as MeeGo, but certainly not closed.

Not anymore the Windows 8 .1 updates makes Windows 8.1 smart phones be in a different league than Windows 8 smart phones and more new features are coming to this smart phone line. I do not trust open source software products because Hackers have access to more info about an Open source Operating system to make Malware that cam mess up your day. it's good to make sure you have a anti Virus and Malware program on any smart phones out there!

No thanks. Microsoft Mobile phones' lack of apps is an issue.

Are you living in 2012? Apps are no longer the issue with WP, at least not for most users.

Major ones are no longer a problem, its getting the obscure apps that droid lovers enjoy, that one in 1000 music player they like above the others and dont want to try another. That is the app gap they face.

I guess PNC bank isnt a major app now..... Not saying I believe the app issue is big, I honestly dont think it is. Hundreds of thousands of apps available on Android...and I only used about 200 - 300....over the course of 4 years. But PNC bank isnt an obscure app.

If Microsoft were serious about these sorts of promotions, they would just offer A Nokia 520/521 on their website for free. They would clear their inventory once and for all, get a nice fat writeoff, and the world could move on from what seems like the perennial "special price" deals and other promotions Microsoft is using to clear their warehouses of the older Nokia Windows phones.

No thanks you, no reason to get the app-less device

WP has many of the most popular apps any games. It has aesthetics and a sick home screen that has everyone from HTC to copying it, darn even Android upcoming updates so called card (Tiles based) are now going to be shoeing friends photos, sounds like WP since 2010. The Android haters gonna hate while their fav OS and skins copy.
