Asus is quickly ramping up the buzz-building efforts for the company's sophomore gaming smartphone effort, which was only recently confirmed for a firm July release (at least in China) in partnership with Tencent Games, which will provide special "optimizations" for hugely popular titles like PUBG Mobile and Fortnite.
Following that somewhat vague revelation, the Republic of Gamers (ROG) division inside Asus took to Weibo once again on Tuesday to disclose a more specific (and arguably more exciting) feature of its upcoming super-high-end handset. This bad boy will apparently sport an extra-sharp screen with a blazing fast 120Hz refresh rate, designed to fully immerse mobile users in silky smooth fighting experiences like those offered by a game called "Under One Person."
Obviously, the Asus ROG Phone 2 should be optimized to natively support enhanced experiences across many popular titles (both in China and the US), substantially improving the 90Hz capabilities of its predecessor's 6-inch display. While most mobile devices that don't specifically target gamers still come with 60Hz screens, including mainstream flagships like the Galaxy S10 and iPhone XS lineups, the ROG Phone 2 will actually not be the first of its kind to raise the refresh rate bar to 120 hertz.
Both the Razer Phone and Razer Phone 2 came with such a super-advanced panel as a major selling point, and although it didn't feel like the absolute game-changer aggressively promoted by the company in its marketing materials, it definitely made a difference, as noticed in our in-depth review of the first edition.
In case you're not familiar with the technology, all you need to know is that the faster a screen refreshes its content, the sharper said content should (theoretically) look, with significantly more clarity, accuracy, and detail at 120Hz than 60 or even 90Hz. Still, we should probably wait and learn more about the specs of the Asus ROG Phone 2 before getting too excited.
