Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 release date, price, features, and news

The Galaxy Z Flip, released in February 2020, made an impression with its innovative and quite premium look. It was followed by a second, slightly upgraded 5G-capable version of the Galaxy Z Flip. Samsung has already released the Galaxy Z Fold and the Z Fold 2, two foldable phones that are also quite innovative and interesting. Although it seems that foldable phones are not monopolizing the market just yet, we can’t help but think the future may lie in their more compact form and big displays.

We are now looking forward to Samsung’s new iteration of the Z Flip, and its name could either be Z Flip 2 or Z Flip 3.  Rumors addressing it as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 seem to be considering the Z Flip 5G for the second iteration of the clamshell foldable phone. Regardless, rumors and leaks have already been giving us glimpses of the upcoming foldable phone, so we might as well explore here everything we know about it.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Release Date

We would have expected the clamshell foldable to be released alongside the Galaxy S21 series in Samsung’s first-quarter Unpacked event in early 2021. However, some rumors already point us to the possibility of the Z Flip 2 not appearing together with the Galaxy S21, S21+, and the S21 Ultra. According to certain rumors, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 may appear later, possibly in April 2021, or even June-July 2021. Speculations tell us that this may be a move by Samsung made to protect the Galaxy S21 line from a possible undermining by the interesting-looking Z Flip 3.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Price

Last year, the Galaxy Z Flip was released at a price of $1,449.99, and the released in September Galaxy Z Flip 5G followed this tendency of a quite expensive foldable phone. However, it is the cheapest foldable phone by Samsung right now.

We expect a similar price, or slightly lower one, to be given to the Galaxy Z Flip 3. There are some rumors, however, that speculate that there will be a more affordable version of the clamshell foldable that will just be stripped of some flagship-grade features in order to keep the cost down.

Additionally, recently a new leak has given us some slightly different information: tipster Anthony states that the Z Flip 2 (or 3, we'll see how the official name will be) will be priced some $50 more than the original Z Flip and it will reportedly start at $1499.99. This rumors is still not corroborated by any additional evidence, so take it with a grain of salt.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Specs

Although not much is known about the foldable phone at the moment, here are the rumored specifications of the Galaxy Z Flip 3:
  • 120Hz screen
  • 6.7-inch display with improved ultra-thin glass
  • similar to Galaxy Z Flip weight and overall size
  • upgraded hinge
  • 3-inch external display

The aforementioned leaker Anthony has had something to say on the topic of Galaxy Z Flip 3 specifications: he states that the foldable will feature a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate, such as the one seen on the Galaxy S21 series, which will adapt the screen refresh rate depending on the visualized content. The same tipster also added that the Z Flip 3 will sport thinner bezels, and a smaller punch hole for the selfie camera.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Design and Display

Rumors say that this time, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 will feature thinner bezels, making it more narrow than the original Z Flip. We have also heard that the Z Flip 3 will have improved Ultra-Thin glass for the display.

As far as the display is concerned, it will reportedly be the same 6.7-inch display. However, the 120Hz display refresh rate might make an appearance on the Galaxy Z Flip 3, which is quite a welcome edition for the foldable smartphone. We don’t know yet if the high refresh rate will be adaptive.

The external screen of the device will reportedly be a 3-inch one, bigger than the current 1.1-inch display seen on the original Z Flip, which, if true, will definitely be a welcome improvement for a quick reply to a text or a glance at a notification. Some rumors say that the external display will not get as big as 3-inches and will be more like 1.8-inches. The same leak suggests that the foldable may feature an improved water and dust resistance. It remains to be seen whether this means an IP68 rating.

Additionally, we hear that the hinge of the device will also be upgraded.

According to a Samsung patent application that LetsGoDigital found, there is a possibility that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 will feature an under-display fingerprint sensor for unlocking and reportedly, S Pen support. As we hear rumors about the Galaxy Note line disappearing from the upcoming Samsung flagship devices in future years, it might be reasonable to expect that Samsung's foldables, the Z Fold and the Z Flip series, may feature the S Pen as well, alongside the rumored Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Camera

Rumors state that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 will feature a triple camera system, similar to the one seen on the Z Fold 2. Currently, the first-gen of the Z Flip foldable phones features a dual-camera system with a 12MP main sensor and a 10MP selfie camera. It remains to be seen exactly what additional camera sensor will complement the Z Flip 3’s camera system.

On the other hand, patents discovered by LetsGoDigital hint at another dual-camera setup for the upcoming second-iteration of the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip.

Therefore, at the moment, we can't be 100% sure on which camera module has Samsung opted for for the Galaxy Z Flip 3. In one of the patents, the phone features three cameras positioned vertically, while on another patent, the phone features a dual-camera system. It is not clear which of the patents is directly connected to the Z Flip 3.

The image from one of the patents gives a hint on how the final design might look like, but take it with a grain of salt as patents don't always come to fruition:

The third camera shown above might be a zoom lens, although this information is not confirmed at the moment.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Processor & Memory

As rumors point to the fact that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 will be revealed later than the S21 series, there are no substantial leaks about the processor that will power the device as of yet. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G (which seems to be the Galaxy Z Flip 2) is powered by the Snapdragon 865+, a very powerful flagship-grade processor. We expect that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 will feature the newly-announced Snapdragon 888 5G flagship processor.

Now, a new leak says the same: it's getting more possible the Z Flip 3 will feature a Snapdragon 888 chip.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Battery life

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G’s battery is 3,330mAh, and it offers quite a good battery life. According to recent rumors about the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 3, the foldable will feature a slightly bigger battery cell. The exact size of the battery has not been revealed yet but we expect to receive a lot of new leaks in the coming weeks.
