YouTube says it is doubling down on AI, creator tools, and parental controls in 2026 to cement its place as the ultimate entertainment hub. The platform’s latest roadmap promises to change how we watch TV, shop, and even create content with our own digital twins.

YouTube's 2026 roadmap revealed

In a new blog post today, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan outlined the platform's ambitious plans for the year. The focus is clearly on solidifying YouTube as the "new TV" while embracing the wild world of artificial intelligence.

First up, YouTube TV is getting a major upgrade that many of us have been waiting for. Subscribers will soon have access to a fully customizable multiview feature (finally!) and over 10 specialized plans for sports, news, and entertainment. For the mobile crowd, Shorts are getting even more versatile with the addition of image posts directly in the feed.

On the creative side, things are getting futuristic. YouTube is rolling out tools that let creators generate Shorts using their own "AI likeness" and even produce playable games just by typing a text prompt.

For parents, there is a massive update as well. You will soon be able to set a timer for Shorts usage, including the option to set it to zero. This effectively turns off the endless scroll for kids and teens, a feature many families have been asking for.

How this could be helpful

So, why does all this matter to you? For starters, YouTube is trying to be the only app you need, whether you are on your couch or on the bus. By adding features like image posts and better TV options, they are trying to make sure you never have to switch over to TikTok or cable TV.

For the creators you love, this is great news because it helps them make money on their older videos. They can soon swap out old ads for new ones, meaning they can keep earning from videos they made years ago.

Most importantly, this could be big for families. The new parental controls seem to be not just about restricting content, but also about giving the parents tools to manage screen time without having to be the "bad guy" taking the phone away constantly.

Giving YouTubers a break

If I'm being honest, the AI stuff sounds a little crazy, but it could be a good thing if used in moderation. Do I want my favorite YouTubers to completely overhaul their content with digital versions of themselves? Absolutely not. However, it could (and that's a big "could") help YouTubers take a break without their channel going silent if it used only in Shorts.

That said, the feature I am actually going to use the most is the new Multiview on YouTube TV. Being able to watch some entertainment content (like the Oscars) and the news at the same time, exactly how I want to, is a game-changer. And for anyone with kids, that "zero timer" for Shorts is going to be a lifesaver. It’s rare to see a tech giant give us a button to stop using their app, and I think that deserves a lot of credit.
