The iPhone Duo's fate hangs on a thread and you've spoken: Crackgate isn't much of a factor

What an epic little fella the Duo is.

Is the iPhone Duo an epic fail or not? Is Crackgate (you know, the broken display phenomenon) really just overblown?

You've spoken your mind!

Almost balanced

The important questions are always the simplest ones, like "What will be the fate of the iPhone Duo?" and you've answered it in droves.

The votes are in:

  • It'll prevail at the end. — 40.80%
  • The way things are going, I can't say yet. — 20.20%
  • Are you kidding me? It'll go down as an epic fail! — 38.99%

And the iPhone Duo achieves a result that's the opposite of the recent midterms. Instead of getting punished for its mistakes, the iPhone Duo hangs on at almost 41% stating there'll be a happy end.

39%, in contrast, believe the iPhone Duo will go down in history as an epic Apple failure. Only 20% can't say how the story will end.

I'm in those 20%. Right now things are looking pretty bad and the reports about cracked displays, misaligned panels and weird purple lines on the Duo are amassing faster than US states are flipping from red to blue.

It all depends on the next two or three months, I think. If the problems persist and more people complain, the Duo will be damned forever and rightfully so. If Crackgate is contained, though, I think the world will forget about it pretty quickly and we'll keep on worrying about other stuff. I mean, Samsung had phones catching on fire and exploding about ten years ago, but I don't think anybody pays that much attention to the whole affair nowadays. Life goes on.

The Ternus paradox

It must be wild to be John Ternus right now. You're the CEO of the company with the highest market cap in the world (yes, right now, Nvidia is a distant second) and you've recently announced your company's brand-new product.

That's the iPhone Duo I'm talking about: Apple's first foldable iPhone. Everything is gold, you're on cloud nine: the iPhone Duo enjoys an insane demand and even if you can't keep up with manufacturing enough units for all potential buyers, that's alright. They'll wait. They've waited seven years (that's how late Apple is to the fold party), they can wait another eight weeks or so.

Then, Crackgate unleashes. In the first hours and days after its launch, many iPhone Duo owners have reported straightforward horror stories. They didn't abuse their phones, they didn't do anything wrong, but the lower right part of their Duo's inner screen got a nasty crack.

It's been almost two weeks since the Duo's launch and the problems are just piling up. I guess it isn't that funny being John Ternus right now, is it?

Some can't be bothered with a replacement, though

If you're a die-hard Duo fan, you'll want your phone replaced and pray the crack doesn't appear again. But what if you're not willing to deal with any of it again? Well, some affected users are choosing the return option. Like this user who clearly distrusts the iPhone Duo:

Instead of the Duo, they'll have the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the iPad mini tablet. It's only when the iPhone Duo 2 or Duo 3 have arrived that they'll consider another Apple foldable.
