The Galaxy S27 series is set to launch in probably just a couple of months, which is putting the questions about the processors of the new phones into focus more and more. After the reports that the Galaxy S27 Ultra may skip the leading Snapdragon chip due to overheating issues were rebuffed, we’re now getting another surprising claim but for the silicon inside the Galaxy S27 Pro.
The Galaxy S27 Pro will reportedly feature a surprising Snapdragon processor
Samsung may opt for two different chipsets for the leading models in the Galaxy S27 series. According to information on the import-export database platform NBD spotted by Notebookcheck, the Galaxy S27 Ultra and Galaxy S27 Pro will use the two versions of the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset.
Gauging by the model numbers in this leak, the listing includes information for the international dual-SIM versions of the four models. Those are usually the variants that are sold in European markets, so there’s a chance some of the devices sold in the US come with different chips.
Still, the Galaxy S27 Pro is seen in this listing with the base Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is shown as the chip inside the Galaxy S27 Ultra. The major differences between the two chips are mostly related to the better CPU, GPU, and NPU performance of the Extreme variant. The most notable practical difference may be that the Extreme chip also supports video recording at 8K at 60fps and 4K slow-motion at 240fps, while the standard edition is limited to 8K at 30fps and 4K at 120fps.

Considering the listing is showing information about the European versions of the S27 phones, it’s not a shocker that the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus models appear with the Exynos 2700 chipset. Samsung has been using its own chips for the base and Plus models of the Galaxy S series in most countries around the world for years.
However, this one listing doesn’t reveal the full picture about the phones in all markets, and Samsung is still likely to rely on a Snapdragon chip for the models sold in the US. Earlier rumors suggested that this will be the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, leaving the Extreme variant only for the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
Leaving the jokes with the naming catastrophe that “Galaxy S27 Ultra powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 for Galaxy” is, the reaction to Samsung’s chipset strategy was mixed. Users on Reddit were quick to point out that the only truly flagship left in the series will be the Ultra, which feels disappointing. On the other hand, there were doubts about how many people would really need the top-tier performance.

While it’s not a complete shocker that Samsung may want to differentiate the S27 Pro and S27 Ultra as much as possible, this strategy may not hold worldwide. Recently, leaker Ice Universe claimed that the Ultra may be powered by the Exynos 2700 in South Korea, in contrast with earlier reports, which stated that Samsung would stick to a Snapdragon even in its homeland.
Pricing is the greatest challenge for smartphone manufacturers right now, and I can see the S27 Pro feeling like a great deal thanks to several compromises compared to the S27 Ultra. I don’t think the hardcore fans of the Ultra will even consider switching to a lower-tier device, but less invested potential buyers may be happy with a slightly more affordable and equally impressive Galaxy. Of course, for this to work, Samsung will have to launch the Pro model at a price that fits the compromises.
