It's not just about a fresh look, the motivation is long overdue.

A new rumor about the Galaxy S27 just dropped, and on the surface, it sounds like another routine design refresh. Dig a little deeper, however, and there's actually a very specific, very overdue reason Samsung might finally be willing to mess with its sacred camera layout.

What the rumor actually says

According to a recent report out of Korea, Samsung is weighing a camera relocation for the Galaxy S27. The lenses, which have lived in the upper-left corner of the back panel for years, could finally move.

We recently covered the broader redesign rumor, but there's an important detail worth zooming in on. According to the same source, the motivation for the move is to make room for built-in Qi2 magnets.

Why the camera placement is the real problem

If you've ever wondered why Samsung keeps dragging its feet on Qi2, while Apple has had MagSafe since 2020 and Google added it to the Pixel 10, this is a big part of the answer.

The Galaxy camera bump sits dangerously close to where the wireless charging coil and magnetic ring would need to live. That has been a real engineering obstacle, not just an aesthetic one.

Samsung's Qi2 problem keeps getting worse

The Galaxy S26 series shipped Qi2-ready, meaning you still need a magnetic case to snap accessories on. As confirmed earlier this year when it launched, the Galaxy S26 Ultra lags behind the Pixel 10 and iPhone 17 in this exact area.

It should be noted that the report also warns rising costs could push Samsung to shelve the redesign entirely. So yes, there is a real chance the S27 ends up looking exactly like the S26.

Here's where I land on this

I own the Galaxy S26 Ultra and I love the phone. But every time I pick up my Pixel and slap it onto my Pixelsnap Charger, I feel a pang of jealousy.

Google figured this out in one generation. Samsung has had years to do the same and instead keeps selling cases as the workaround.

If the S27 actually breaks the camera tradition for built-in magnets, that's a genuinely good reason to redesign. If Samsung backs down because of costs (again), then this becomes another chapter in the same tired story.

For now, color me cautiously hopeful, but not holding my breath.
