T-Mobile hasn't made a secret of wanting the T-Life app to be the main channel for transactions. Now, the company is stepping on the gas by encouraging store visitors to embrace self-service.
Checking in via T-Life

Jeff Moore, Principal at Wave7 Research, today shared an image of new tabletop signage placed in T-Mobile stores promoting the T-Life app. If a customer has already granted the app permission to access their location, they will get a check-in prompt when they walk through the door. If not, the sign urges them to enable location access and check-in.
How do you feel about this check-in protocol?
What's the point?
Rumors of a check-in system for customers first surfaced in early 2025. T-Life is apparently connected to an in-store system, alerting management to your arrival.
While the new sign suggests a Mobile Expert will assist you after you sign in, the long-term vision is reportedly to reduce reliance on employees.
For now, the reps are mainly there to coach you on using the app to do transactions yourself. Eventually, customers will likely be on their own.
T-Life purely exists so people order products from home so that way T-Mobile doesn't have to pay out as much commission, and so that way eventually they can close stores entirely.
T-Life seemingly uses location services to trigger a "store mode" whenever a subscriber enters an outlet. This can boost efficiency at stores. One example is that you won't have to fight queues, as those who check in the earliest will be served first.

Works great. Was in a line waiting for check in behind 3 other people. I was served first as I “checked in” earlier via the app.

Employees will still make an exception for some edge cases, like helping a customer who lost their phone.
Given that T-Life is mandatory for most transactions, if a customer makes the trip to a store, it's usually because they want human help. That's not to say that customers dislike the T-Life app.
Had a customer yesterday come in for an activation. Didn't want to hand over her phone for me to assist, which is totally fine. She just went straight to cart. I just sat there twiddling my thumbs. There isnt a point to me being there at all, which she noticed. She even said "wow I could have done this from home, but i came in to the store to work with an employee, and nw you're telling me i cant"

So, as customer, if I wanted to “use the app” I would’ve stayed the hell home and done that. If I drive to the store, it’s because I actually want help - not someone to navigate the app “for me”.

In fact, the app's perception has begun to improve, with many customers indicating they prefer using the app to interacting with an employee. T-Life also adds transparency, making it difficult for pushy employees to sneak unnecessary extras into customers' carts.
Concerns
Customers who aren't tech-proficient find the forced usage frustrating. Others are wary of it due to privacy and security concerns. T-Mobile's own numbers show that only 30 million of its 142.4 million customers actively use the app.
Many take issue with the fact that they are paying postpaid prices for prepaid service.
As TMoblie customer the reason I stay with a big carrier is because I while I can handle most issues myself. I like the option of going into a store and getting help directly.

One of the big criticisms I heard about MVNOs was there wasn't good customer service, but if tmobile doesn't offer customer service anymore and wants everyone to use an app for everything and do everything themselves, I might as well pay half as much for my service.
