Samsung’s excellent Galaxy S27 Ultra upgrade scares customers for a very fair reason

Samsung has a brilliant upgrade in store for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, but it might not be cause for celebration for all of us.

The Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra will feature something exciting next year: the new UFS 5.0 storage standard. However, this upgrade — coupled with the current crisis that has enveloped the tech industry — has scared some potential customers because of what, in my opinion, is a very fair worry to have.

The Galaxy S27 Ultra might just be too expensive

UFS 5.0 on the Galaxy S27 Ultra will be blazing fast — around twice the read and write bandwidth of UFS 4.1 — and will also be 40 percent more energy efficient. In a poll, we asked you how the inclusion of UFS 5.0 in the Galaxy S27 Ultra might affect your purchasing decision next year.

Over 47 percent of you said that it might make the S27 Ultra too expensive, enough to make you consider going for another phone instead.

Samsung is betting on the power users

Given that the Galaxy S27 Ultra will also be powered by a 2 nm chip, almost 38 percent of voters said that they were willing to pay anything for such a combo. Though the jump from 3 nm to 2 nm won’t be too noticeable for the average user, its combination with UFS 5.0 will make for a super-fast phone for power users.

Lastly, a little under 15 percent of respondents said that they didn’t really care one way or another. What about you?

Expect a price increase

The worry about the Galaxy S27 Ultra becoming too expensive for some users is not unfounded. As the memory crisis is projected to only get worse next year, a better storage standard should, logically, cost more than an upgrade of this magnitude would have normally.

Apple tried to absorb costs to win over market share in more regions around the world and it failed. The iPhone 18 Pro will see a price hike, and so will the Galaxy S27 phones as well unless Samsung is able to work some insane magic.

Despite the costs, I’m quite excited

Whether UFS 5.0 makes the price tag for the Galaxy S27 Ultra jump through the roof or not, I’m excited to see how much snappier it makes smartphones.

However, I do find it quite amusing how Samsung developed UFS 5.0 to handle AI tasks, while those same AI tasks are mostly to blame for the memory crisis in the first place. The industry is in a really weird place nowadays.
