Pixel 11 will be no iPhone 18 or Galaxy S27 — and that's its superpower

The Pixel 11 will reinvent the smartphone experience, while the iPhone 18 and Galaxy S27 will play it safe.

Google will pull the wraps off the Pixel 11 series on August 12. If the lineup doesn't appeal to you based on the rumors so far, you probably never understood the charm of Pixel phones in the first place. Google is unlikely to change direction just because critics deride it for skimping on specs. But that might be why the phone succeeds.

Defying expectations

Pixel smartphones have never been the devices you buy for raw hardware clout. Google has admittedly lost some of the camera edge it once held over rivals, largely because competitors caught up on the software front while the Mountain View giant didn't bother matching them in the hardware department.

Instead, the company leaned heavily into AI, which isn't the primary reason customers upgrade.

To sum it up, Google seems to be prioritizing things no one seems to want, while actively distancing itself from the things that are supposed to matter. And yet, the strategy is working.

Pixel shipments grew 16% year-over-year during the second quarter of 2026, outpacing every rival including Apple and Samsung. Meanwhile, the broader market shrank by 11%.

Specs aren't everything

While Pixel handsets are routinely criticized for trailing behind on speeds, megapixels, and battery capacity, flashy spec sheets didn't exactly help Chinese brands Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo, which all saw double-digit percentage declines.

With the memory crunch forcing several manufacturers to bump up prices, budget-conscious customers are delaying upgrades.

Here again, Google proved to be an exception, with the Pixel 10a selling well.

Pixel 11's uphill battle

The Pixel 11 may look like it will struggle.

The Pixel 11 series is going to be about €100 pricier in Europe and $100 more expensive in the US. For that premium, standard model buyers get a new main camera, but everyone will have to settle for smaller batteries.

The Tensor G6 will be manufactured on a cutting-edge 2nm process, but any gains might be canceled out by the fact that Google is dropping one of the processor cores.

Further complicating things is Pixel's lingering reputation for being a hodgepodge of bugs.

Charting its own path

How is the Pixel 11 going to attract buyers with barely any hardware upgrades? The same way Pixels always have.

The core Pixel user base doesn't care about specs. They value a distinct user experience. They want a clean user interface and zero carrier bloatware. Pixel phones are also generally the first to get new software updates, making them the de facto choice for Android enthusiasts.

While Pixel may not be the standout choice for quality pictures anymore, many still prefer them for their natural-looking photos and reliability.

Google is also expected to address two historical pain points, dropped calls and abysmal battery life, by introducing a new modem.

An ace up its sleeve

The thing that may give the Pixel 11 the push it needs is the rumored Pixel Glow. It'll be a light-based notification and hands-free system that will reside in the flash unit.

Google is really killing two birds with one stone here. First, by putting a notification system on the back of the chassis, Google is catering to the growing demographic of users trying to slash their screen time. Second, by giving users a physical way to interact with Gemini without unlocking the device, the company is taking on standalone AI hardware, such as the rumored OpenAI rechargeable speaker.

It's a risky feature, but another example of Google's futuristic vision. It aligns perfectly with digital wellness trends, mimicking the philosophy of devices like Brick to keep you from constantly ogling your screen.

The Pixel 11 will try to reshape the smartphone experience, while the iPhone 18 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will continue clinging to a safe formula.
