Bug in iOS 27 will freeze your iPhone, and here is the solution
A bug in iOS 27 can cause your iPhone to freeze, but don't panic as we have the solution.

On the day that Apple released iOS 27.2 Beta 1, and just a few days after the stable version of iOS 27 was disseminated, iPhone users have discovered a series of swipes that will temporarily freeze their iOS 27 powered handsets. Of course, the entire process is going viral on social media and some are pranking their iPhone-toting friends and tricking them into freezing their devices.
The iOS 27 bug only works if an iPhone is running iOS 27 or iOS 27.2 Beta 1
On an iPhone running iOS 27, head to the Home Screen and swipe down from the top-left corner. By the way, this is how you check out your notifications in iOS 27 since the old method, swiping down from the top-center of the screen, now opens the Search or Ask interface powered by Siri AI.
To activate this soft-lock trick, start swiping down as though you were opening the notification center on your iPhone. Way before you get to the end of the notifications, swipe down from the top right corner just as you do when opening the Control Center on iOS 27. After opening the Control Center, dismiss it and at that point, you will know if your iPhone has temporarily been bricked.

If you go through the above process, you can tell if your iPhone is paralyzed by checking out how it responds to swipes between home screens. If the device fails to respond to such swipes, or tapping elements inside open apps doesn't work, your iPhone has become a victim of a soft lock. The good news is that your iPhone won't stay in this useless state forever.
Before we tell you how to return your iPhone back to its normal working condition, keep in mind that there is a limited window of opportunity to enable the lock. In other woirds, it might take you a few times to freeze your own iPhone if you are attempting to do this on your own device (not that we suggest doing this to yourself, as you'll read later).
How to restore an affected iPhone back to normal working condition
To get your frozen iPhone running again, follow these directions to force-reboot your iPhone:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Hold the side button down until the Apple logo appears.
Do this and your iPhone will reboot and everything will return to normal.
This is going viral and eventually Apple will fix this issue permanently. You might remember that back in 2015, a certain message sent to iPhone users would freeze their phones. Several iPhone users had this message sent to them on purpose by online bullies hoping to panic an iPhone user into thinking that his phone was broken.
Similar "text bombs" have arrived in the past
Other "text bombs" caused iOS to crash repeatedly eventually forcing a bootloop. In 2018, the iOS 11.2.5 update had an unintended issue that caused iPhones to crash whenever a specific Indian character belonging to the Telugu language was sent via iMessages or inserted into a text field.
Returning to the iOS 27 bug, some on Reddit have said that they noticed this issue on the iOS 27 beta, which means that Apple did not make any changes to remove it during the beta period that lasted for about three months.
Fight the temptation to attack your own iPhone
I know what you iPhone users running iOS 27 are feeling right now. You are so, so, so tempted to try to see if you can replicate the issue on your iPhone (or at least on a buddy's iPhone). But you have to fight this temptation. Yeah, doing the force-reboot isn't the end of the world, but why brick your own phone?
I'm also not suggesting that you trick your friends. Some of them might not appreciate the joke; you know how touchy some people can be about their phones.
