Following what’s going on with Google Messages lately has been a wild ride, filled with a surprising variety of bugs, ranging from innocuous malfunctions to some truly disturbing glitches. Fortunately, there’s also a stream of new features, some of which are truly nice. Now, the app is getting another update, which may not be all that popular after all.
Google Messages rolls out its chat about Google Messages
A few months ago a new business chat feature was spotted inside Google Messages. Its goal appeared to be to let users know about the latest updates to the app, but the information in it was quite narrow, and it felt like a limited chatbot.

Now, the feature appears to be reaching users. One user reported the new Google Messages business chat in their app, sharing a screenshot with information about the app and RCS. It also appears users can ask for more information or details on how to use specific features.

For now, the chat only allows users to choose from a set of predefined quick responses, with the ability to type regular messages being turned off. As Google hasn’t officially announced the feature yet, it’s unclear if this is the final version that’ll reach users or if there will be further updates to expand its abilities.

It also appears the update is reaching users as a server-side update because it’s not widely available even on the Google Messages beta. Multiple users have reported on Reddit that they got access to the chat through an in-app popup asking them if they wanted to “join the Official chat for feature updates.”
Google Messages will be far from the first texting app to get such a feature. WhatsApp and Telegram also have similar chats with announcements for newly added features, though they’re not as interactive as the one offered by Google.
Hopefully there’ll be an opt-out option
As nice as it is to have an easy way to learn about new features for my favorite texting app, I’d much prefer not to have unsolicited promotional messages on my phone. That’s why I hope Google gives an easy way to not receive such messages.
