Google Messages is one of those apps that you probably wouldn't rush to download, but that's because it's preinstalled on millions of devices—it's that important.
Not only is it essential, but it's also malfunctioning right now for many users.
Got any group chats?
If you have some group chats in the Google Messages app, you—if you're unlucky enough—will notice that things are messed up.
As the latest reports read, group chats now split into separate threads. On Reddit, for example, users have complained that the existing group chats are spilling into new conversations with the same participants, only without the prior history.
This effectively leaves affected users with clone conversations. Deleting the duplicate doesn't work, though, as once someone in the group chat sends a message, instantly a new, separate conversation is created in Google Messages.
Per the report, Google has acknowledged the issue and is actively working on resolving it. The Big G is asking affected users to submit feedback through the Google Messages app, using the hashtag #splittingthreads so engineers can identify the reports easier. Google also asks users to allow email contact in case the team needs additional information.

Which phones are affected by this?
There's no concrete formula for the bug to show up. Both Pixel and Galaxy users say they're affected by the group chat bug. Some say they recently used Samsung's Smart Switch, but others say they were affected without a device change.
The RCS issue is also a thing
Like we told you mere days ago, the Google Messages app is also experiencing RCS-related issues.
The search engine giant has also confirmed that it is aware of the issue. In short, there's a bug causing RCS to stop working for some Google Messages users after they switch to a new Android phone.
Some say that RCS remains stuck on "Trying to connect" and displays error code 3100. Google has suggested several troubleshooting steps, including updating Google Messages, resetting Carrier Services data, restarting the phone and re-enabling RCS, although these solutions haven't worked for everyone.
One Reddit user even claimed that connecting to a VPN server in Paris temporarily restored RCS, although this is obviously not an official fix. Google also warns users against downgrading Google Messages, as older versions could potentially erase messaging data.
