The latest Google Messages glitch is making me shudder
Google Messages is sending old messages to people who were never meant to see them.

Does that sound too dramatic? How else are you supposed to respond when a bug starts sending old messages to random contacts? Panic doesn't even begin to cover it.
It's like Mean Girls all over again, except this time you aren't getting framed for something you didn't write. Google Messages knows what you texted your best friend last summer, and, for some reason, it's itching to send it to your co-worker. Which might be fine if you and your bestie only speak in code. Otherwise, that bitchy text about your boss just landed right in your colleague's inbox, and they probably can't wait to accidentally spill it out.
It might not play out exactly like that, but who am I to offer false comfort?
Aren't communication apps supposed to bring us together? When did Google Messages become a snitch?
I am a very private person. I could be double-checking that 1 + 1 equals 2 on my calculator, and I still wouldn't want you looking over my shoulder. My basic math skills are my business.
You might not be quite that paranoid, but I can bet that no one wants a texting app to end your message with a postscript containing an older text sent to someone else just for funsies. The worst part is that Google doesn't seem to grasp the gravity of the situation.
The app has run amok, but Google couldn't care less. Someone tell the company that it's not as benign as another recent bug that split group chats into new threads.
This one is dishing out private information. It's forwarding inappropriate texts to bosses. This is an emergency. And what is Google doing?
It's sitting on the patch. That's right. The company has figured out what went wrong, yet it's sticking to its staggered rollout schedule. That's despite the fact that this problem first popped up a little over a month ago.
Google Messages isn't my main texting app, but if it were, I'd be using it as little as humanly possible after this nightmare.

I will type a completely normal SMS to one person and press send. However, Google Messages sometimes replaces the message I just wrote with an OLD message that I previously sent in a completely different conversation.

Forget AI breaking out of its sandbox and hacking into other companies. Hugging Face is still thriving. But if Google Messages drops your text into the wrong inbox, pretenses will fall, and relationships will crumble.
The same thing is happening to me; now I can't text family members because I'm afraid Google Messages is gonna expose me.

I literally just had this issue. It's extremely upsetting and has brought me so much anxiety.

This happened to me years ago!!! Since then I have always been terrified of it happening again, and this thread kindly reminded me that one of my biggest fears is still possible. Thankfully when it happened to me nothing too revealing had been sent to anyone that mattered. How is this not a lawsuit?!
